actually, the material of the shield doesn't count for anything but shield attacks.

you have a very useful item there, because artifacts give the highest to-block bonus

To my knowledge, shield material only matters for bashing things.  You can block dragonfire with a shield made out of soap that menaces with spikes of lignite.  A horse leather shield won't be that great for bashing, but it'll block things just fine - especially since it's an artifact.  Any shield-bash attacks will be a little weak, but I wouldn't let that dissuade you from giving this thing to your militia commander.

It's great because it's an artifact and it's light as well! As others said, the material doesn't matter for shields (except for weight).

Maybe the leather was hardened? It's a little unusual, but I like that in an artifact.

Actually since it's an artifact it might be decend for bashing. It won't do much damage but the accuracy multiplier means it's much more likely to hit whatever it was going for. A shot that doesn't do much damage is better than a shot that doesn't connect.

Reminds me of a movie, 2 guys kung-fuing it out. One guy punches, other guys catches his wrist and stops it short. Guy opens his fingers and flicks him in the nose :D

My militia commander has an artifact leather shield and she goes around kickin' everyone's asses. She has routed several sieges by herself.

On her first battle she was something like adequate on hammers, like the rest of the militia. Everybody was wearing full copper armor, a shield and a silver warhammer. Except her: she had the legendary shield. While everybody died in the battle, she killed 17 goblins and only got a minor cut in her leg. That was the power of the shield.

But unlike the steel shield wielders, she never scored a kill with it. So it is awesome for blocking, but useless for bashing.
