how do i use minecarts properly?

so just because i know someone would try this: with properly i mean for hauling, not to weaponize them

i set up a small track from an excavation site (magnetite, bitoumus coal and dolomite all on the same place :D) with properly route (no yellow exlamation mark anymore)

yet my dwarfs totally ignore the tracks/minecart and still just use wheelbarrows to bring the stuff to the melter stockpiles...

put a bed right next to the tracks, assign to one of your nobles, hope that nothing bad happens >:)

I also need help. Do you have to define stops at each corner? I have a contiguous track, but i'm still getting the !Set stop/dir error.

Track stops don't actually count as track, so you need to build them on top of an already-exisng track.

its just sad how stuff needs to be derailed instead of helping :p

so i got the cart rolling now, you need to define an stockpile as input.. but that resulted in even more stupid behavior :(

they took magnetite from the other side of the fort thats already near the melters to the stockpiles, just to be put into minecart and carted "back" to the melter stockpile which was just a few tiles away in the first place :(

Sounds like it's dumping it onto the ground at the end. If it's doing that, then it's just stone on the ground that needs hauling.

Dump into a stockpile, just like the one they're taking from.

they bring the magnetite from each mined place to ANY stockpile, just to have it in the minecarts driven back anyway

You could try creating stockpiles under the boulders you've mined out, and then set the main stockpile(s) to take from those other stockpiles.

Also, make sure your main stockpile(s) aren't full, which could make them take the stones elsewhere.

Finally, stockpiles with wheelbarrows have a limited number of haulers based on the number of wheelbarrows the stockpile has.  If all of the wheelbarrows from one stockpile are in use that might cause them to use wheelbarrows from other stockpiles.
