Dwarves like water as much as cats that can swim.

It's not really a coincidence.

Well if you keep accelerating in a minecart for a few hundred miles in adventure mode, you could possibly skip over an ocean.

!!!

Beds are only made out of wood right?

Plonk those in the sea, hey presto, you got yourself a boat adventurers can sleep in.

That'll be after we get currents e.t.c, and you get intercontinental sleep patterns...

I think Toady mentioned that boats are on the list for the future.

They are on the dev list under "Adventurer Role: Explorer" though.

If Toady One was the prophet of some new age cult hell bent on assimilating the world, he'd be a pretty good prophet.

Wait... We aren't a cult hell bent on assimilating the world?  What am I going to do with all these dark scary robes I ordered for us though?

But... The world is so boring and/or depressing.  I'd rather play Dwarf Fortress. Goblin shafts violate OSHA, the Geneva Convention, and most national laws, plus... No goblins. :(

what are you implying? that dwarves = cats? HM!? that dwarves dont like the water because they are feline in nature? I always assumed they just didn't trust the water...

I know this is a pretty long-term ordeal, but I think I remember Toady wanting to make elves and humans playable in the distant future, and there was talk of sending parties of units away from your fort's site to go on missions. I think it would add some flavor/specialization to the humans if they were the most proficient sailors, since it kind of makes sense. Elves are more magical than technological and seem content to malinger in their forests, and while dwarves are fantastic engineers I can't see them taking well to being at sea for long periods of time, since the ocean is just a vast, outdoor expanse. Most of them would probably not be very sea-worthy, but their boats would probably be of good construction like everything else they make. I'm imagining a scenario where the dwarves hire out humans to man their ships with a dwarvish captain to oversee them. But that's only one interpretation really, there isn't a lot of canon to DF.

But, I'm probably looking forward to boats more than anything else, the question is what to do with them. Transport for troops and settlers? Exploring parties? Trade ships? Off-shore fishing? What about pirates? Y'arr! Yes, I think boats would be a deep well of possibilities.

Once boats are implemented, a lot of people will be killing dwarves with them, just so they can say they boatmurered something.
