So, is there any reason to award a gladiator freedom, rather than make a pittance in gold off of them by selling them?

Awarding a gladiator freedom awards you the chance to replace him or her with a gladiator that is better in every way from the top of the pool. I've seen the statlines for these gladiators and often not a single stat goes below 75. Highest stat I've seen was a 90 base strength.

Well this update is pretty sweet, to summarize for those who haven't checked on it yet:
-Challenge system improved and reworked, now grants a ton of money out of your opposing stables coffer if you win, or vice versa money to the opposin stable out of your coffer when defeated.
-Bank now let's you deposit and withdraw gold. Deposited gold is safe from challengers but you lose a tenth of the stuff you deposit.
That's what I gathered anyway, might be mistaken.

I've already had two stable challenge Aegis and lose, netting me a fine 1000 gold a fight. Better think twice about keeping sub par fighters in the stable now though, as they become a risk to losing lots of money on challenges.

Also I meant to ask, anyone had some succes with the theatic style counter strike? I've been trying it out instead of parry on my defensive theatrics with limited succes. Almost all counter attacks are very inaccurate and lack enough force to do any serious damage.
I tried activity 3 and bloodlust 10 to see if the attacks that do hit at least hit hard but no dice. Not sure if I'm using the strategy correctly.

Bah, more weird changes. Apparently intentionally challenging gladiators now/soon allows you to steal some of their gold if you win. To compensate, you can now deposit gold at the bank for a 10% fee, and withdrawing it is free.

Other than more carefully mimicking the thuggery present in standard "free" games, I'm not sure what purpose this serves.

As a replacement for the old system, I assume. Letting players mass up gold unattended is a terrible, terrible thing!

Then again, I dont think people actually use the challenging thing very often.

Alright, so here's my deal; I have a better piece of armor (+5) with +20 Attack Power. But I'd have to lose 3 points of strength and 1 stamina or 3 points of strength and 3 chi. How important is attack power, and how can it be related to, say, strength?

A common issue for me, but sadly I have no idea. Trying to test such a thing would be pretty difficult.

Way I compare the two is to take two achievements of about the same level one with strength one with attack damage and comparing the values. There's probably a more exact way to find out.

I'm getting really into this challenging business. I'm making good progress simply challenging non rages and avoiding rages at all costs. Primus bracket here I come!

Also the stables I've been consistently challenging keep coming back for revenge. Feel the love.  :P

I'm considering selling ThreeToe once the Blood Games are over. He's been put in a really bad spot for doing so well. EVERYONE in Maximus is a dual wielder with over 9000 agility, ThreeToe can't get anywhere. Kinda difficult for Armok too since 90% OF ALL THE FIGHTS HE GETS ARE AGAINST LIGHTNING FAST DUAL WIELDERS. You know, the kind of glad that seems to be made specifically to take down 2 handers.

Are shields just plain useless or something?

Well, on the few occasions I've fought a glad/tavern quest who only had a shield... They lost.  :P

Been wondering about this myself. In particular, weapon skill is so powerful that I wonder if someone with both one-hander and shield skill would be really strong; thus far, I haven't really seen many shield users, though, and certainly none that stood out.

If you ask me the balance is a lot like rock paper scizzor except with a lot more variables and way less balance.

Most generally speaking you have your two hand weapon wielders dealing slow but crushing blows who get countered hard by fast opponents by taking to many hits to keep the offense up.
And I've found the speedsters gets countered best by defensive fighting styles that block the fast but relatively weak attacks with ease.
And full circle the defensive fighters get crushed by the big hitting two hand styles with attacks that are simply to powerful to block.

More or less anyway, balance seems a bit wonky and defense is just not as good as offense.

When running my two defensive glads most dual wielding speedsters that are not rage are favorable matchups. Not certain victory but favorable.
Rage however...even when going for speed those attacks are still devestating enough to crush through defenses with ease. That is unless they're wielding daggers or something.

Rage two hand is a sure loss, there is no defending against attacks that inflict up to 1000 damage regardless of your defense stat.
War two hand on the other hand does not always end bad and I've seen a fair share of two handed attacks being outright blocked. Still not the best matchup though.

When I fight vs another defender? Egh almost never happens. Luckely I guess since it tends end in a game of who the enforcers beats down first.

So yeah, the two handers get countered by dual wielders, duel wielders get more or less countered by defender if they weren't so weak. End result seems like dual wielders dominate the game mostly.

If you ask me shields should recieve a flat boost to defense stat. Achievements give up to 30 defense wich is about the same as a buckler, a lv 30 tower shield with weight 14 gives about 200. Apart from the damage on one of those being pretty weak (as it should) the penalty of wielding an offhand will drag down your main hand primary weapon dealer.
That penalty along the fact you need to train two weapon skills to 10 just shields a poor choice I guess.

Edit: Man I typed way to much

Don't know how long it'll last, but the gladiator Arrowx in the Blood Gods tier has a broken weapon, and is easy pickings.

Sadly, I only came upon him after I'd used up all but 2 of my fight tokens, but by challenging him I won 10k gold from his stable.

edit: Hmm, still a little dangerous - got two more tokens, and Z took a 1.5k hit, lost 900 gold. X won again. Net of 14k bonus gold from beating him up.

Apolagies for necroing this, but it didn't seem like a good idea to make a new thread for it.

This game has recieved a major update on its combat engine and skill trees just today.
The changes are quite drastic so if you played at some point or are interested in trying this game out now is a great time to get in the pit.
I'm quite thrilled about the changes myself, it really opened up a lot of strategies that weren't possible before. So many new builds and interesting skills.
In addition the game also recieved a chat function some time ago, so chat me up if you decide to join in, I'm still stable Honorbound.
I just thought you guys should know.  8)

Shameless recruitafriend link, otherwise there should still be a link in the OP.
