Pig tail/rope reed VS leather clothing?
« on: May 18, 2012, 10:44:17 pm »

Does it make a single bit of difference as to which the little psychopaths wear? Does cloth wear faster then leather? I have a mess ton of worn clothing lying about and the caravan brings a huge load of leather when i request it, im thinking of getting completely away from cloth and going leather. Sorry for the double questions, the wiki is not very clear on the longevity of cloth vs leather. Thanks for any assistance rendered.

Its all on taste I think, some dwarves like animal products of certain animals. Others like pigtails or rope reed.

Generally, I think you should go with whichever you are more comfortable with farming.  Leather is cheaper and I think has slightly less protective properties than cloth, but they're basically interchangeable.

I would say, however, that I generally go with pig tail simply because butchering is manually intensive, and having a screen full of dead animal corpses you butchered to get the leather causes FPS drop over time.  Farms take less micromanagement, aside from occasionally having to reissue orders after job cancellations due to supply hiccups.

Huh, I thought leather was better for protection, because I heard of peiple giving their troops lots of layers of leather hoods and cloaks. Then again, I didn't hear how effective it was.

For clothes, it doesn't really matter. I'd go with cloth because you can dye it for more value.

Leather is slightly better than cloth against blunt weapons by the stats. 2 of the 3 blunt-impact-related stats are identical between all forms of fabric, but for the third, leather is twice as good as the other fabrics (this says little; its impact elasticity is 50000, compared to less than 1000 for every metal, and lower is superior). For edged attacks, it's uncertain whether leather is better or worse than other fabrics; its shear elasticity is twice as good as the other fabrics', but the other 2 relevant shear stats are less than half as good, but it's not known which of those stats has the greatest weight in determining actual effectiveness. The elasticity probably matters less, though; steel's elasticity is inferior to iron's, for instance, yet it is superior for all uses.

Of course, given that metal armor is quite effective against edged attacks from inferior materials but that blunt attacks seem to be little-affected by it, having slightly-better protection against blunt attacks from clothing is probably better than even greater edged protection (if you want edged protection on clothes, use silk).

Leather is thicker than cloth, so it does offer better protection. However, it's not all that much.

Really?  I thought leather was thinner...

Anyway, on the question of "does any sort of clothing wear faster than any other clothing?" the answer is, "no", at least as far as anything I can tell.

In fact, cotton candy cloth, which is notably nigh indestructible in any other form, will wear down as fast as any other piece of clothing, last time I checked.

When the dwarven caravan from home appears the first time I order as much leather for next year as possible. If they arrive successfully and I got all the leather I order 100 leather bags and then it all goes into leather clothing. Leather stock at this time is at roundabout 1200 leather. Usually.

After that, clothing industry is going cloth.

I equip my military with layers of cloth. Leather is for quivers ^_^
Personally though, I haven't seen much difference between the two. Might science it later.

I checked the raws a while back, and leather offers slight protecting from slicing weapons. No blunt protection though.
Would be good to cut down on  claw damage of wildlife I suppose.

I remember I had a fort a whlie back with good Dyeing system going.
A Dyed Robe goes for like base 400 DB, when the caravan needs clothing you just make even more profit.
Then the dyer got eaten by a cave croc in the main stairwell...

Any particular reason you're limited to one or t'other? I tend to make roughly equal amounts of both.

Either one would require a large farming or animal industry, which for one reason or another some players wouldn't have access to.

Animals:
  • Not possible without vegetation.
  • Lots of animals.
  • Evil biomes = hohohohohohoho

Plants:
  • No above ground access/rope reeds = during Winter/Fall = only pig tail reserves from the last two seasons.
  • No farming space

The amount of space and time required to produce plant cloth is a lot less (and more scaleable) than it is to produce leather. Learned this with alpaca farms.

Also style is important to me, so I prefer to make shoes out of leather, clothing out of cloth, and so forth.

True, but it's not as though you have to be self-sufficient in them, and indeed I'm not sure it's achievable without sacrificing self-sufficiency in something else, at least not for a young fort without many spare hands; the new hauling mechanics ought to help though.

Spoilerite cloth, of course. Hey, at least it makes sense when they run to their deaths to grab socks from their dead friends then.
