Caged Enemies
« on: May 18, 2012, 10:43:10 pm »

Hi :).  Total noob with a question here-  How exactly do you move/release, or otherwise interact with caged enemies?  I have a goblin snatcher in a cage and I want to drop her off a cliff  :P.

Hit 'j' to build the cage next to the cliff; you can skip this step, but they'll drag the goblin from the cage location, which can cause problems. Next you use 'i' to designate a pit/pond zone by hitting 'p', then enter to start and stop placing the zone. Make sure that it is over the space near the cliff and not on the cliff itself. Now that you have the pit designated, hit 'P' to edit the pit information. Select the name of the goblin in question with + or - and hit 'enter'. Then just wait and they come along and toss her off into oblivion.

What he said.  Also, the reason dragging a captive around is a problem is that civilians can get scared and run away - even if they're the ones responsible for transporting the captive.  This results in a goblin loose in your fortress, which causes additional problems.

As a side note, if you're going to be dropping goblins off cliffs, I highly recommend putting menacing spikes at the bottom.  It's not really necessary (especially if it's a big cliff), but it is amusing.

If you have something you want to release without killing it, you can just assign the creature to a pasture.

At least, I am pretty sure putting a caged thing into a pasture releases it... They released my giant mantis when I told them to put it in the pasture.

A thief?

Ohohohohohoho.

It'll escape if you try pitting it normally. Build the cage wherever you want to chuck it, link it to a lever and release it that way.

I never had an issue with mass pitting, thief or otherwise. You just have to remove their weapon before pitting them to be extra safe. For some reason dwarves have thr balls to drag an enemy out of a cage and pull them somewhere. The only problem ive seen is when your piling so many enemies into a pit of magma that one enemy has an almost chance of escape and it cause everyone to scare off, including the dwarf whose dragging the troll. Ive learned to line the entrance to my pitting room with more cage traps and to keep it near my barrack.

Careful with undead or thieves- they tend to break free of your haulers, leading to !!FUN!!.

Also be careful with tamed invader mounts and creatures that have killed dwarves- you can haul them around but they are still enemies of your civ, and this is bad news. You will not be able to reinforce their training. I have ordered invader mounts chained only to have my military follow the hauler and attack their charge; the haulers never let go of the creatures until they were dead.

Only if you have to haul it more than one space.  As discussed before, this can be avoided by building the cage directly adjacent to the Fun Happy Pit Of DoomTM.

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

Ah, nostalgia. I remember the first time I ended up caging critters and asking the forum for suggestions on what to do with them. One idea that comes to mind for my dream fortress: Build a road dotted with clear glass terrariums to display any fantastic creatures I manage to cage. If my favorite dwarf has a preference for a creature, build a terrarium for it in his room.

...Can dwarves admire creatures through glass walls, or would they have to be glass fortifications?

Bronze Dog has been feeling rather happy lately. He is fond of scimitars, black bronze, turquoise, and kobolds for their underdog status.

Glass walls are opaque.  Don't ask me how that works, I don't know.

Glass walls/floors: same as rock walls/floors (can't see through)
Glass fortifications: same as rock fortifications
Glass windows: transparent
