I don't need muddy soil for underground farming?
« on: May 18, 2012, 08:43:50 pm »

I just realized that on peat I can farm plump helmets and other underground crops right from the beginning.

Is this a bug?

You only need muddy soil if you're farming on rock, underground soil is fine, along with aboveground soil.

It still works, and is good practice for safe water handling skills.  Also, irrigation means the odd stone block in the soil you planned to use is no longer an issue due to the layer of mud the water leaves behind.  And the final silver lining - if you've been irrigating stone floors, you've been doing it right the entire time because only soil (sand, clay, loam, etc) does not need irrigation.

You can get volunteers of the cavern type plants on unmuddied soil too, once you've pierced it.  Watch out for trees growing up to block construction sites.

If it makes you feel better for a long time I saw a bunch of people making that very mistake, so you're in good company.  :P

I myself liked it back when you needed to irrigate soil to farm. Feels more realistic and everything, and made me feel all that overpowered amounts of food I get from farms is worth it, since I had to go through all the trouble of that.

Does muddied stone no longer grow trees and shrubs?  I flooded the bottom half of my fortress in .08 and haven't seen any pop up.

I liked the irrigation in older versions as well, but not having to muddy does make things much more convenient, and muddying stone deep down for tree farms or deep secure food farms (or ones near the magma forges) is still fun.

This. Assuming you have pierced the caverns, and the muddy stone is natural and not constructed floors then things should begin to grow there.

You must have been playing for quite a while before you joined the forums. The last version that I know of that required yearly irrigation was 23a, which was a fair amount of time before I even started playing. From 38b on I know that the maximum irrigation required has been a single flood only if the ground was stone (with the exception of a few versions where a bug meant that you had to "muddy" soil just like you did stone, still only required a single flood once though).

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Everyone who joined in early DF2010 had to irrigate soil. This generally meant people used aboveground farms in those versions. In any case, try embarking on a mountain biome and you'll still need to irrigate the stone, unless you dig down to the cavern layers.

Given current events, I've altered my profile pic and I'm sorry it took so long to fix. If you find the old one on any of my accounts elsewhere on the internet, let me know by message (along with the specific site) and I'll fix. Can't link the revised avatar for some reason.
