34.09 - Never any witnesses to vampire murders
« on: May 18, 2012, 11:50:28 am »

Hey all,

Wanted to check to see if any one else have had this problem before reporting it as a bug.

I've now had three murders by a vampire, all three occurred in my statue garden / dining room / meeting hall / hospital / dormitory which is a 10x10 square. All three times there have been over 50 idle dwarves in the same room where the victim was drained of blood. The third time I even had 20 soldiers and a chained dog stationed in the room trying to catch them. I have yet to receive a single witness report! I double checked the obvious - my dwarves have not been exposed to blinding FB syndromes nor have they been drinking methanol.

Hopefully dfhack for .09 will be out soon so I can continue playing and remove the vampire by cheating to find out who it is. DF: CSI was actually entertaining before but now I'm on the verge of a tantrum spiral since the last two victims were my very social surgeon and a child of the mayor.

Also wanted to mention I do have a captain of the guard and hammerer. It has been an entire season since the last murder and both are idle since they have no labors set.

I believe witnesses will not report murder to your CotG if it's him who they have seen committing murder. So, I'd check the CotG for typical vampiric personality traits.

She was part of the first migrant wave, brought her husband with her and has 3 children. The vampire issue is more recent. I'll try replacing her with one of my original 7 and see what happens. Of course if she isn't the vampire but three dwarves died on her watch any way she's getting entombed with the vampire as an accomplice.

check if she has thoughts from drinking, sleeping or eating - vampires don't

Witnesses may take their sweet time to report. I had a fort in 07 where they took a year to report a guy, luckily I caught him with Dwarf Therapist. Drink Blood is a valid job with the strange mood icon... :o

Did you charge the witness with obstruction of justice?

The Ex CotG was clean, she had a bunch drinking, eating, and sleeping thoughts.

Through process of elimination (reading 50 dwarf profiles) I found one vampire, might be more but definitely got one. I convicted him of one of the murders and got spammed with a bunch of Cancel Beat Criminal: Invalid Officer errors. Same thing when I convicted him of another murder.

It's also easier to look at the blue list near the top of all the relationships; a huge list 1/3 the page is a big warning sign, then check relationships to see if the vampire has lots of friends/family but none in YOUR fort, and lastly at the bottom the vampire will have extra things to say in the "needs alcohol to get through the working day" part.

Then assign your vampire to be the leader of his own personal squad, move him to a location, and wall him in with a desk and chair to make him a bookkeeper.  He slows down incredibly as he runs out of dwarves to feed on, too slow for a manager but not so slow as to be a poor bookkeeper.  Also, put some nice things in the rooms for him to admire so his happiness helps if he's the last "dwarf" alive.

I don't have a clue about this error sadly. Maybe it's because you've fired your CotG and have none now?
Try checking your hammerer for vampirism too.

Error was from setting CotG = Hammerer. Apparently known bug. Was the only other dwarf I had handy that handles stress well and I'm superstitious about well trained heavily armed dwarves roaming freely in the fortress. My last fortress was 10 years old and had a mayor from the first 7 founders that had lived through two spirals and was a master weaponsmith. The CotG's husband got stabbed by a Minotaur in the lung then dodged off the top of a 10 Z waterfall.  She wasn't too happy about this and complained to the mayor, didn't like what the mayor said and went berserk. Didn't matter the mayor had master combat training, armor, and a weapon - office still got redecorated and it took a squad of marksdwarves and a squad of speardwarves to take her down. New policy!

Ran fortress forward another year and no reports. No more deaths either so guess there was only one vampire. I'll try releasing him and see what happens next time he gets hungry.

It's a pity. Executioner, judge, executioner, jury, and executioner all in one person sounds pretty much like what a fortress needs  ;D
"Uhh... you said executioner three times."

I think that's called Judge Dredd.

With the 4th murder I got a single witness out of 60 idlers in the 10x10 room - a child came forward two seasons later and correctly accused the known vampire. So it is technically working, I'm just really really unlucky or witness rates have been turned way down in .09.

I just have barracks by squad in my current fort, so no one's ever alone.

The only person who had their own place to live was my pain in the Urist mayor, who was found dead within days of getting his own nice, private area due to a vampire.

So now I do my best to keep the vampire out of trouble, and inr eturn he gets to stay for doing me a favor and murdering a mayor who liked banning -all- my trade goods.
