I think having only 3 used per stock pile is pretty ridiculous.

Huge food stockpiles don't matter that much, but huge stone stockpiles? It takes forever to move a single bit of rock now without a wheelbarrow and for a huge 100x100 stockpile, 3 wheelbarrows doesn't cut it.

Sounds like 100 10X10's would suit your needs better...

I think the wheelbarrows are cute. :)

I haven't even tried minecarts yet.  I just don't have the magnitude of goods to transfer to justify building a minecart system.  I've gotten used to building a fortress centralized around a central stairwell, so things don't take very long to move in any event.  The only things I have noticed are really slow to move are stones, ore, and somewhat oddly, copper pipes.  I think perhaps full bins might be a little slow, too.

I tried using (h)auling to make a wheelbarrow path, but it doesn't seem to work? It says ! Set dir/connect track. is (h) only for carts?

Yes, why yes it is.

So you do not use (h) for wheelbarrow? then how do they get used for stockpiles?

I actually like the wheelbarrow addition and change to response to object weight in hauling. A single massive stockpile certainly would be a bit unmanagable, but my mason's hall has had no problems. I am using 4 workshops with a 7-tile stockpile for each one. Each pile accepts only a single type of stone and has a pair of wheelbarrows assigned. Since my masons don't do the hauling, my dedicated haulers have no problem keeping up with the speed at which the stone is used up.

The new changes just require a slightly different methodology to manage your piles and resources. But they do work quite well when applied correctly.

By default, yes. If you went and added a new tool that also had [TOOL_USE:TRACK_CART] in its raw entry, then you could assign it with (h) as well.

I think the biggest problem is people adjusting to the new way of hauling.  We are used to having huge central stockpiles where everything is collected.  With wheelbarrows and minecarts we need to use a more distributed model.  Put mall wheelbarrow equipped stockpiles near areas where resources are generated (in the mines, in a forest, clay harvesting).  Build a minecart delivery systems from these small stockpiles to the central storage location and then back out again to the shop floors.  This way it is just a short walk with a wheelbarrow and then into the cart.

[q] on stockpile, then [w] to cycle through 0,1,2, and 3 wheelbarrows.  w after 3 goes back to 0.

I cut up my huge stockpiles to a lot of smaller ones. Always have, actually. This is because only one hauling job can be done per stockpile, so it's better to have 4 25x25 stockpiles than one 100x100 stockpile because that way 4 haulers can get shit done. Apply that to wheelbarrows and you get 3*4=12 wheelbarrows for what's essentially the same 100x100 stockpile.

That has... actually never been true, so far as I know >_> I set up a food stockpile when there wasn't one before and every dwarf immediately goes to fill it up, ever since 40d at least.

Wheelbarrows are only good for two things:

1) Hauling stones
2) Limiting how many dwarves you want working a single stockpile. In the stockpile thread I mentioned a way to minimize having your haulers taking all of your seeds away, causing your farmers to cancel jobs, by assigning a single wheelbarrow to the seed stockpile, making it so that only one seed bag can ever be out at a time. That could work for any bin/barrel/bag jobs that work as inputs to other production.

And you've always been able to have multiple jobs per stockpile, even well before 40d. Every embark I've done since way back in the 2D days involved digging a staging room by 1-2 dwarves, designating a single food stockpile, and getting the other 5-6 dwarves to haul the food inside. In the 2D days, that would become my trade depot room, because everyone would have cave adaptation and I got tired of the traders leaving because everyone was too busy puking to finish hauling crap to the depot.
