Wheelbarrow hauling
« on: May 17, 2012, 10:08:06 am »

Hello,

I've been watching the forums for a while but here I have a problem I can't fix reading you guys.

I have trouble getting my dwarves to haul more than one item using wheelbarrows. Since I didn't want to bother with minecarts and tracks for hauling purposes for now (started a new aboveground fort and still some bugs with dogs not avoiding etc), I thought it would be great to use wheelbarrows since stone has gotten quite heavy for the dwarfy arms of my dwarves.

BUT. They just haul one stone at a time. "Maybe that's just stones are too heavy" I thought, despite the fact that I read on the wiki wheelbarrows can carry 1/5 the stuff a minecart can carry. Then the same thing happened with wood and then I got worried. I was pretty sure I read Toady talking about "intelligent hauling" in one of the dev reports (althought I was sceptical, "intelligent" and "dwarf" don't usually come up in the same sentence).

Is there some kind of thing to configure to allow my dwarves to haul multiple items? How to do it? How do you do it?

I don't do it.  Each stockpile can have three wheelbarrows, and each wheelbarrow can haul one item.  I have found it only worthwhile for stone stockpiles (including ore and clay).  Someone else said logs were hauled slightly more quickly.  Even if that is true, for me it was not enough more quickly to outweigh the advantage of having more than three haulers moving the logs.
