Which is better: A legendary dormitory for all the dwarves, or each having their own bed but getting the "slept in an awful bedroom lately" thought?

I don't think simple dwarves can get that thought, only nobles can.

all my regular dwarves have their own bedrooms, some not very fancy ones, and none have that thought, but a lot of "admired own bed" and such thoughts. My guess is you got a noble, probably assigned a better bedroom but forgot to unassign the old one?

I give each non noble dwarf a 2x2 smoothed bedroom with a bed, rock cabinet and a rock coffer gives at least 'slept in fine own bedroom' sometimes better if it is high quality furniture or precious rock.
check the happiness page in the wiki for details, owned items give twice the happiness, but common rooms are more valuable so give higher happiness bases, so find your own optimum.

it doesn't matter how legendary the dormitory is, they might admire furniture in it, but they'll never get a good thought for the room, only "slept without a proper bedroom."

Yes, if you want your dwarves to be as happy as possible, individual bedrooms are the way to go.

note that they claim rooms that are assigned as bedooms by themself, no need to assign everything to them by hand

However, you'd better come up with a setup where each bedroom has a transparent wall (fortification for easiness or gem window for happy thought) next to a frequented traffic area, so any vampire visiting one of your sleepers will get witnessed.

I've always been able to dispose of vampires through unofficial channels, witnesses optional

Please elaborate. !WANT!

Edit: Wait, do you mean like locking them in a room or something? Or getting rid of them?

I've got a 263 dwarven marshmallow, in 34.04, which MUST have a vampire or two in it...and I've never had a feeding or "drained of blood" event occur.  I have huge communal bedroom chambers with beds separated by 2 tiles vertically and horizontally.  I designate the bedrooms as the bed plus one tile in each direction (results in a 3x3 space).  Every dwarf has thoughts about 'slept in his own fine bedroom lately' or something like it (sometimes nicer).  I'm slowly smoothing and engraving the bed chambers to increase the value and happy thoughts.  I've EASILY got enough space for all the dwarves and probably 20 extra beds for when the 50-75 children finish growing up.

Maybe I've just never gotten a vampire but it seems outlandish that I don't even have one vamp after over 250 migrants have entered my fort.  If it's in the raws and someone can suggest it, I'd be happy to investigate.

there are some tell tale signs that someone is a vampire still, after that, make him a one man squad and station under the atom smasher in a remote location

actually, I always make my next militia captain bookkeeper, helps them to organise their squads for training later on, though that is just my opinion and not based on actual evidence

not really, vampire density varies widely between different worlds, there are worlds where it feels like one immigrant out of 10 is a vampire, in other worlds vampires are practically nonexistent
