Forgotten Beast -- A gigantic "bunting" & "emaciated"?
« on: May 17, 2012, 01:27:34 am »

So my theory is this is a gigantic "bird" which is very thin and has deadly gas?   Or does bunting and emaciated mean something different?

Bunting (bird)

So yes, a gigantic bird that is also rather skinny and emits deadly vapors.

Looks like its body is made out of coal...  how can I break its corpse into tiny coal pieces?

The good news is that charcoal is quite brittle, so it should go down without too much of a hassle.

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

Anything that isn't metal or flesh (like snow, ash or charcoal) that composes a FB would make it easy to fell.

Take it on, Jedi.

I had a charcoal one stand up forever against steel spikes, it needed to be hacked apart. The good news, any axe will do. The bad news, deadly dust

I prefer the idea of being attacked by a gigantic string of festive pennants.

The darn thing was extremely fast... it seemed to be teleporting within a 5 square radius instead of moving.  I tried to setup some military then open a drawbridge to ambush it, but it took a different exit out of the caverns to the surface before I knew it.  The thing killed 4 war dogs before flying into the center of my melee outdoor barracks.  It's aura extract managed to put to sleep one of my soldiers and a human merchant soldier before we chopped off its head.

The strange thing is its body was taken to the "new raw hide" stockpile.  The only thing selected in this stockpile is "new raw hide".  They walked right past the refuse(remains\bodyparts) stockpile.  I checked my tanner and no options for tanning a hide so not sure why they placed it here.

I haven't been able to break its body into smaller coal chunks, even dropping 3z levels didn't help.   :(

Holy fuck, that is a cool FB. I'm imagining it as a spirit of the sentry birds used in mine shafts. You know, the ones they would use to detect CO or CO2 and evacuate people. I remember reading that coal veins produce both of those gasses, and the bird is made of coal. On top of that, the breath weapon puts creatures to sleep... It makes entirely too much sense.

Lower leg of coal was also placed on the "new raw hide" stockpile...  if only there was some way for the smelters to do something with it!

**On a side note:  Another Forgotten Beast arrived... it was a naked human giant.  He died by marksdwarves as soon as he was within range.  It would have been awesome if he was friendly and joined my fortress.... then I'd have a reason to purchase large sized armor and weapons.
I think in my next game I'll have to find a mod which provides equipment\weapons for intelligent enemies, because if that giant was decked out equipped with steel armor, steel axe and wielding a tower shield then he might have been able to do some damage....  poor fella never had a chance approaching a fortress while naked.

"Large" sized equipment is not all created equal. Large armor worn by a dragon is actually much larger than human armor although they both appear "large". A giant would not be able to wear human armor even if there were some way to get it to equip it. Also giants are megabeasts, not Forgotten Beasts; they have long worldgen histories and kill lists, and all their properties are defined in the raws (i.e. not procedurally generated.)

I recall reading corpses do eventually break down into useable bones after 10years, so I will try to keep my fort running another 10years of dwarf time to determine if the coal body parts become usable coal.

Shit, that's a long time to wait for furnace fodder.

Oh. I've GOT this. You should build a statue of the FB using the bars of coal yielded from its bones. We have the hydrocarbons, we can rebuild him!
