Wierd turned around startled. It was Reudh.

"Actually, Yes." he said after a moment, before pointing at the trees over his shoulder. "Those are Honey Locusts. They are packed full of sugary goodness."  He smiled broadly. "And that down there is a wood sorrel. Pretty purple flowers... Crisp, tart, sourness. Great in salads..."

"So, you have experience collecting wild foods then?" Reudh ask with a raised eyebrow.

If Reudh really knew just how often he had actually LIVED off wild edibles as a child, it would probably floor him.. then again, here in an early iron age culture like the DF universe, such things were probably alarmingly common... starvation would be a constant, and ever-present threat.

"You could say that.."

"Allright.. I'll leave you to it then. Just show me what you picked up before you turn it in though."

Wierd smiled. Caution was a good thing.

"I will."

[We did have planeswalking, remember. Perhaps Lana's human parent went to a plane were they existed?]

She would have come through one of the portals that showed up a long while back.  The ones that transfer you between planes when you lose sight of the terrain of your old plane (ex. going through a mountain pass or a thick forest). She would not have survived planeswalking.

Those portals go between DF worlds, though, so it's possible they might still be around, depending on if they gave us an advantage.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Anyway, ever heard of a Kapok tree? Wonderful trees that grow everywhere down here in SoCal. When I read, "Kapok warhammer" in Arena mode, I cringe a little, because that sounds very painful. Point is, though, those would be very useful trees. Though I'm not sure we're in the right climate. They pretty much require the kind of climate that you might find coffee in.

Speaking of which, I doubt any of us have seen coffee since this whole thing started. You guys are probably cured of the addiction.

[Argh, I won't be able to get to a keyboard until tomorrow.  I'm thinking of doing my cambion explanation in the style of that fluffball excerpt from a while ago.  That means I need to look up the name of that book again.]

[Okay, I found it.  The Complyte Gide to Beastes, Bothe Magickal and Mundane is the title.  I'll have it typed up tomorrow night at the latest.]

Quote from: The Complyte Gide to Beastes, Bothe Magickal and Mundane, translated and annotated by Jathrur
Cambion (homo ampersans):

A cambion is simply the offspring of a demon and a human.  Technically, the term could also apply to half-elf or half-dwarf demons as well, but for reasons explained in detail later, these variants are far less common.

For the most part, cambions are indistinguishable from normal humans.  They tend to be slightly more angular than full humans, and are generally paler, but not so much as to appear unusual.  The main differences are more subtle.  Their demonic parentage grants cambions significantly improved physical attributes.  They are stronger, faster, and tougher than full humans.  In addition, they have natural access to magic on par with most human or elvish spellcasters.  In addition, they gain most of the abilities of their demon parent, such as flight or toxic saliva.

Cambions are rarely seen to eat, drink, or sleep, unless they are making an effort to blend in.  This is possible because they derive their sustenance not from food, but from people.  Specifically, they feed off the natural magical energy that all sentient beings produce.  The exact mechanics of this are the subject of much ongoing research, but it is apparent that this feeding does not cause any lasting harm.  Instead, any sufficiently sensitive spellcasters close to a cambion will notice their natural magic reserves refilling more slowly, and ordinary people may report an odd sense of weariness or, in rare cases, nausea.

At this point, it should be explained why cambions are almost exclusively the offspring of a human, rather than a dwarf, elf, or goblin.  For one reason or another, humans are much more likely to broker deals with demons.  This has been true for all of recorded history, going back to the First Age of Myth.  Dwarves and elves vehemently and automatically reject anything to do with demons on principle, though for different reasons.  Goblins, though often found under the rule of a demon, generally only serve them, rather than trying to extort them for their own ends.  It is an exclusively human idea to make arrangements with demons to try to better their own standing.  Often, these deals involve "selling one's soul" for power, but other arrangements are occasionally made.  The deal most likely to result in the birth of a cambion is that of the "firstborn exchange," where the demon grants the human power in return for his or her firstborn child.  If the human in question has no children, the demon will take it upon itself to create one.

There are many issues faced by cambions, quite apart from the social consequences of being half-demon.  They share all the vulnerabilities of their demon parent, which can range from aversions to certain metals to the inability to cross running water.  Mental insanity is almost assured, as the cambion's demon and human sides come into conflict.  Even if cambions disguise their demonic nature perfectly, they often find it difficult to form lasting relationships, as their continued feeding sets those close to them on edge.  Furthermore, their strong magical presence makes them a prime target for all sorts of supernatural predators, including in many cases their own demon parents.  Finally, all cambions are sterile, and thus incapable of ever having children of their own.

It is important to note that, though they appear similar, cambions and vampires are wholly different creatures.  Vampires draw their sustenance from the blood of the living, while cambions feed off their magic.  Vampires' powers come from their cursed blood, while cambions' come from their demonic parentage.  While neither needs to eat, drink, or sleep, cambions are much more likely to do so anyway in an attempt to fit in.  While a vampire may also be a wizard or sorcerer, it is in no way certain.  All cambions, however, have magical abilities.

[Jathrur's note:  Much of the original text had to be cut and replaced, as it was flagrantly biased against cambions.  As it turns out, the original author of this work had a nasty encounter with a group of rogue cambions as a small child, and the memory of it flavored his opinion of the supernatural ever since.  In truth, most cambions are genuinely good people, as they try to counteract their own evil, demonic halves.  The few exceptions, however, tend to be the most well-known, as their literally superhuman abilities make their wrongdoings all the worse.]

[Seems to me like the parent would have to be one of the demons who disguised themselves as a human deity, since those are "twisted into human form" and have gender. The demons in hell seem to have no gender when seen on the units screen. Either that, or she comes from an older universe with tentacle demons. Or one with the succubus mod.]

[no wonder X doesnt like her. His magical reserves come from the same sort of passive absorption. Still, I know 2 things that would have gotten through X's barrier. Light, and sound. I know this, because X can hear her talking, and can see her inside the dome. Light is the first thing I would have tried after realizing the dome's indestructibility. The control console is an obvious, if cliche, target. Sound might have unfortunate consequences, in that the dome might act like a sounding board with the imprisoned still inside. Ever put a bug in a ziplock bag and tape them to a subwoofer? Yeah. Nasty business.]

Picking goodies was relaxing. Just the gentle swooshing and rustling of the wind through the treetops, and subtle chirps and furtive noises of birds and forest creatures. It almost seemed like one of the many "extended camping trips" he had gone on as a child. The prospects of the dreary and broken fortress had almost totally slipped his mind. He'd have to ask Jerry to leave some of the forest alone. He didnt care if the others would brand him "Elfy" for it, Forests were awesome. Not worthy of slavish worship like the elves did, but still awesome.

His basket was getting pretty heavy with the half-dried, curly, and mottled brown honey locust pods. He had made a joyful discovery of a hen-of-the-woods in some leaf litter, though he doubted anyone but himself and maybe Reudh would be at all excited by the enormous blob of amorphous mushroom folds. There were a lot of things in this little forested glen he was picking through, but not a lot that was at sustainably harvestable levels. If you intend to come back to an area again, you always leave enough behind for the animals and for the plants to perpetuate themselves. There were a lot of acorns, but he didnt feel desperate enough to harvest those just yet. The process to remove all the tannins made them labor intensive in the extreme, and as such, really should only be taken when explicitly necessary because there is nothing else. The number of useful things growing in this forest was suspicious to him, since many herbs were growing seemingly at random, but clearly out of place for the biome, like lemon balm, plantains, elderberry, wild ginseng, yarrow, curly dock, genuine licorice, and many others. You would expect maybe the yarrow and doc to grow on the forest edge, but the seemingly random distribution of all these things, and the fact that many were really exotic, like the ginseng, suggested that maybe this forest had been cultivated at some point. Elves were a strange breed-- Maybe they had been responsible?

About a hundred yards in from the forest's edge, there was an ancient black walnut tree. Typical of the species, it had murdered nearly all the plantlife around its rootzone with juglones from its cast off leaves and the pulpy fruit bodies that surround the actual nut shells. His basket was already pretty full, but he might come back later for the walnuts. Cracking out black walnuts was always a chore, and they were an acquired tasted anyway. Personally, he liked them, but he wasnt so sure about the others. They were touchy to use in cuisine, and their earthy, slightly bitter taste made their use in deserts problematic. The hulls made good tumbler polish though, and in a pinch, a suitable substitute for coal in blacksmithing.

Further in, he bumped into the river, as it curled around the countryside upstream of the fortress. Cattails were bobbing nonchalantly in the gentle breeze. He doubted the others would understand why he was smiling his fat face off, but he knew that cattail rhizome could be peeled, steamed, and mashed up like potatoes. Cooked right, they would make a nice companion with the jerkied fish. The young sprouts were equally delicious, and tasted a little like sweet corn. He sat his basket down, picked up an old stick, and started digging up the long, branching rhizome from the bank....

....

Several hours had passed, as he continued to harvest and wash the orange-brown skinned and white fleshed rhizome from the slurpy mud bank, and wash them in the river. He had quite a mound of them packed into his basket, which was now nearly overflowing with the samples he had collected.

He washed off the muck and grime in the stream, carefully walked back up the bank at a less disturbed location, and was about to pick up his heavily overloaded basket when it struck him-- like peal of thunder, or a flash of lightning, the slowly strengthening magical awareness he had been developing since learning to use magic flared up, raising the hair on the back of his neck, and sending tickles down his spine. Somebody was using *A LOT* of magic, and it was making him edgy. He couldnt quite place the exact spot, but it was coming from where he believed the fortress lay. Hefting the heavy basket with a grunt, he shuffled back as quickly as he could manage...

[Weird and Hugo are both on their way?  This has the potential to be very interesting.]

[Also, as far as light and sound getting out, that's only because they don't contain any magical energy.  Any light- or sound-based spell would be stopped by the shield.  Furthermore, destroying the control panel wouldn't drop the shield.  It would actually make it so that it couldn't be lowered until the panel was rebuilt.  I've read the Evil Overlord List, you know.]

X could have slapped himself.  How had he mixed up vampires and cambions?  He'd read the Gide, he should have been able to tell.  It explained everything, assuming she'd got the teleportation from whichever of her parents had been the demon.  Speaking of which, he'd have to find a way to let Gizogin know that maybe his parents' relationship wasn't as stable as he'd always believed...

"Well, either way, I'm still not letting you out," he said.  "Not without a guarantee that you won't do any major damage while you're here."

"What do you want me to do?" she asked, seeing no way out.

"Swear to me that you will do no harm to the residents of this fortress, and that you will do everything you can to limit the impact your feeding has on us."

"That's it?" asked Lana, suspicious.

"That's it," X confirmed.

"You are aware that I'm half-human, and therefore not bound to my word in the way that a full demon would be, right?"

"Do you want me to change the terms?"

"No, no, that's fine," she said hurriedly.  "Okay.  I swear that I will not harm anyone who lives in this fortress, and that I will do whatever I can to limit the negative effects of my feeding.  Good enough for you?"

"I should think so," X said.  "Just give me a minute, and I'll drop the shield."

"What's going on over here?" came a familiar voice from behind.

"Ah, hello weird," X said without turning around.  "And Hugo as well, so nice of you to join us."  The dragon was indeed approaching the glowing dome, but from a different side than weird.  He also hadn't announced his presence, but X had known he was coming from the vibrations underfoot.  The footsteps of a massive dragon are hard to mistake for anything else.

[Minor edit to change a bit of wording.]

[Aaaand, no-one's online right now.  Might as well cover Gizogin's side of things while I'm waiting.]

--Slightly earlier--

Gizogin rubbed the sleep out of his eyes.  He hadn't been sleeping well recently.  Actually, strictly speaking, that wasn't true; he'd been sleeping very well.  Better than he could remember sleeping in a long time, in fact.  He was just more tired than usual.  It wasn't much, but it was there.

He called over his worker droids and pulled out the blueprint he'd been working on.  It was a relatively simple device, not even close to his usual complexity.  It was just a medical scanner, to aid him in his doctoral duties.  Normally, he hadn't felt the need for one, especially with X around, but ever since that radiation scare he'd been meaning to get one built.  The droids scanned the paper and got straight to work.  Gizogin allowed himself a small smile as he saw them split up to gather the necessary supplies for the task; he was quite proud of how they'd turned out.

The sound of a large explosion a ways off made him jump.  He spun to face the source of the noise, and saw a large, glowing dome in the distance.  He could just make out two figures by it, one inside and one outside.  'Must be X and Lana,' he thought to himself.  He and X generally held that an experiment just wasn't an experiment without a few explosions to let you know things were moving along, so he paid it no further mind.

While picking the bounty of the nearby forest, Reudh suddenly felt a prickle go down his neck and down his spine. Something weird was happening.

"Eh, was probably nothing. I'll get back to harvest," he merrily hummed to himself.

[So, if this combination of X's shield and Lana's attacks threw out enough magic that wierd, Hugo, and Reudh picked up on it from far away, I think it's probably safe to assume that some other, less savory types might have felt it as well.  Just a bit of food for thought; I don't actually have anything planned in regards to this.]

I was in the tunnels, wierd was in the nearby woods, and so was Reudh. To be honest, there's not many nearby dangers at the moment, save one. But that will come up soon enough.]
