"Given the size of the hall, i'd look for slits and panels in the walls." Weird leaned in through the open doorway, looking furtively at the walls and ceiling. "The last thing we want is to be in that hall, with the door shut and get caught in whirling blades and rising water, with hidden spike traps and overhead magma chutes. With a password like "boatmurdered", I wouldn't put it passed them... unless they were pathetic posers or something. That seems unlikely though, if they could succeed in making the door mechanism."

He grabbed a chuck of loose concrete from the floor and chucked it down the hall, only to illicit no reaction from the hall.

"Fall-away floor is another possible bit of fun... right into the spikepit room 10 stories down. So many prospective ways that hall could be nasty... I don't like it."

"People, keep in mind that the multiverse is a big place. Could be that these people were just from Boatmurdered's universe (which exists somewhere) and remembered that name with fear. They could've just popped here through the universal barrier, things like that happen."
"Still wouldn't explain some of the carvings. Either way, traps may easily be a problem."

"It could also be a parallel boatmurdered itself." Weird scowled. "For every world, there are infinite variations on that theme. It would certainly explain the volcanic ash in our basement."

He frowned even deeper, proving that such a thing was indeed possible. "But boatmurdered was in the .40d-ish era. Couldn't have supported advanced things like this, and certainly not the carvings...  I still don't like it."

"What's this 'Boatmurdered' you're all going on about?" Lana asked Gizogin.

"Did I seriously never tell you about it?" Gizogin replied, taken aback.  "Boatmurdered is one of the most famous fortresses of all time.  The overseers were completely insane, the dwarves were idiots, nature itself tried to destroy it, and don't even get me started on the elephants.  Basically, it was the epitome of Dwarf Fortress."

"So why is that so worrying?"

"Well, the people running Boatmurdered loved their elaborate traps.  There was one to flood the entire surrounding area with magma for miles in all directions, and they didn't hesitate to use it.  If whoever built this is anything like Boatmurdered's overseers, we could be in a lot of trouble."

Gizo X was sitting on the floor, listening to Gizogin's explanation.  "I can't see any signs of that sort of mega-trap here," he said.  "A magma flusher or drowning trap would be fairly obvious.  There are an awful lot of hidden weapons, but they're all connected to these pressure plates, which are inactive.  This floor is too solid and anchored to be a drop-trap.  Same goes for the ceiling."  He stood up.  "It seems they were relying on these regular traps as their primary defense."

Weird made a mirthless smirk.

"What we need is a sacrificial test subject."

The room quieted, and accusitory glares homed in on him like icy lasers. Hw shruged his shoulders and held his arms out. "What? I meant a zombie."

"Where are we gonna get a zombie?" Asked Gizogin dryly. Weird smiled mischeviously, and pointed at the skeletonized necromancer on the floor.

"That thing's been singing in my head since we arrived..." he said. "Tie some rocks to it, heat them up a bit to trigger any thermal sensors.. stand away from the door, and watch what happens.  You said he wanted in there bad enough to die for it, right?  There aren't any other corpses around-- what's it gonna do?"

Oliolli's face was wrinkled in thought.
"Boatmurdered... was in the 23a era. Means that much time has passed since then, if thinking meta enough."
"That universe would be much older than those of the 40d- 2010- or later eras. No reason for stagnation."
"Technology could have advanced in that world up to that point, easily enough."
"I like the idea of sending in the dummy skeleton, though. We only have one natural limb left, after all."

Lana turned to look at Oliolli with a troubled expression.
"You know, if one corpse isn't enough, we could just wait until night and go get some bogeymen."
Turning to Lana, he simply stated: "We can thank Gizogin for three of our limbs."

Cue complete devastation of the corpse, and magma flowing towards forumites.

Never, never ask that.

*the wanderers have been allowed in, until the forumites return. Until then however, they are to work on assisting the local populace.*
"Well, At least this place is doing better after that strange event that occurred here, right? It certainly seems safer than wandering the world, wondering when the goblins or bandits will finally kill you."
"I don't really know, sssir, but i have to agree that being in the handsss of dwarvesss is better than being a goblin ssslave."
"Anyways, Surkla, what do you think?"
"I believe that we will find our path soon enough, this much Talsdeir, the great lady of magic and mysteries, has told me."
"Ah yes, I nearly forgot that she speaks to you. But that must mean something important will occur soon."

Run into that soldier sometime.  It may prove interesting, to say the least.

I am going to be gone for the next eight days, starting tomorrow.  How many pages do you think will be added?

I have just been corrected that it will be 10 days, so raise that estimate.

Good thing "dozens" is a pretty wide estimate. Above "several", beneath "hundreds".

[Stuff with the BSA.  It'll be the last activity I can participate in before I age out, so I have to make it count.]

[Ahh... the fondest memory I have of the BSA was stealing all of the sout master's son's clothes, and throwing them up onto the stone latrine building while he was in the shower... oh yes. That was waay fun.  The little prick had the 'i'm untouchable!' Complex, and had soaped up the shower floor and gotten people hurt and laughed about it. We trapped him in the shower, stole all his clothes, drenched them in soap, and threw them on top of the latrine. He had to climb up there bare assed naked to get them down again. It was worth it. Everything else about that trip sucked bollocks, but that was awesome.]

[It had been a dought year like this one is, with triple digit temps, no AC, heavy army surplus grreen canvas tarp-tents with poor ventillation, and an overchlorinated water treatment systen that bleached green scout socks orange. It wouldn't have been so bad with only one of those, but all three at once sucked.  I remember, we got in trouble for taking the fire/rain barrel, dumping it out and cleaning it out with the shower water supply line, filling it back up, and using it as a cooldown tank. They told us they thought we could get hurt (somehow..) doing that, and threatened disciplinary action if we did it again. It was so hot and dry that trip that a tree one of my troupe had tied his hammok to died and fell on him. It was out of control. But the latrine thing? Pure gold.]
