Gizogin was at the top of the ramp, checking his instruments. "Wait, there seems to be an infared source coming from a small spot above the door."

"Why would.... Near, or Far spectrum?" Shouted weird up the stairs. "Heat, or illumination?"

"Half a moment... illumination, seems like. Sensor's not cooperating with me right now, so I can't tell the wavelength."

"That would be Near spectrum, closer to visible light.  Far spectrum is really long wavelenth blackbody emmisions from heat."

He looked at the door again, looking to see if he could see the sensor. If there was an infra-red scanner, it was tiny. It could be any number of things with IR scanning beams: simple proximity, like a supermarket door, or gesture controlled, like a Kinect... optical badge recognition.. all kinds of things...

"How can the power still be on?" He said to himself frustratedly. "It would have to be an rtg or something running this place, and those aren't a normal piece of hardware... and even they wear down after a century or two."

"Kognassussun... Kognassussun..." HugoLuman muttered. "Is it just me, or does that sound a bit like Koganusun?"

"If I remember correctly, it's dwarven for 'Boat murdered.'"

As he said this, a klaxon rang out from somewhere nearby, and with a sound of large machinery moving, the room shook slightly.

"This can't be good..."
Oliolli readied his weapons.

"Well, that was convenient," said Gizogin X. The door shuddered and began to move to the right. A huge mechanical arm was rolling it into the slot in the wall, and after what seemed a very long time, it finally grinded to a halt, the way fully open. With a loud clank, floodlights came on in the ceiling of the tunnel and illuminated a wide passage spiraling down into the hill. The walls and floor were concrete, braced with thick metal pillars.

"So who wants to go into the creepy abandoned tunnel first?"
Oliolli raised his hand.
"FUCK!"

Why does this seem like schmuck bait, and why am I fairly certain that there will be some sort of mechanical guardian somewhere in there?

Oliolli made to walk down the tunnel, but he ran into X's outstretched arm blocking his path.  "Pressure plates," he announced, pointing to the bit of floor Oliolli had been about to step on.  It looked no different to any other area.  "This entire hallway is trapped.  There's a safe path, hang on."  As he spoke, he wove a simple illusion spell, one to create images where there were none.  He released the magic, and most of the floor lit up in neon red light.  "The red light represents the traps," he explained, while a significantly smaller portion of the floor began to glow blue.  "The blue is safe."

"Hold up guys," said Gizogin, still at the instrument panel. "That hall is full of more infared signatures. Motion sensors. Don't go in just ye... wait, they're disappearing. All turning off."

HugoLuman took a tentative step past the threshold, then walked all the way into the passage. Carefully, he poked one of the squares illuminated in red. Nothing happened. "Huh. It's almost as if we're welcome. That, or these traps are broken."

Gizogin frowned. "Please don't do any more stupid things."

"Sorry."

"I'm more concerned about the implication of the password." Weird grumbled. "The chances of that being a coincidence are astoundingly small. If they chose it on purpose, it means they weren't just a freakishly advanced culture in the middle of late iron age culture. It means they came where we're from."  He looked over at X with slitted eyes. "It means we should be even more radically careful. We could walk in, and have the door slam shut behind us... and *then* the fun starts. I designed more than one hall of doom that way... if these folks revered boatmurdered as awesome, then diabolical is the watchword."

X tilted his head curiously. He was an artifact of this world. No experiences from outside to draw on. The real Gizogin overheard as he was coming down from the rampway, and frowned aprehensively.

"Truly." He frumped.

"This one's a dud too," Gizo X said, replacing the false stone over the pressure plate.  So far, none of the traps he'd checked was operational.

"This doesn't make any sense," Lana commented from outside the hall, where the others were waiting for X to finish.  "What's the point of a hall full of traps if they all deactivate as soon as you open the door?"

"Well, look at the wall over here," Gizogin said.  "There's a section that looks like it once had a keypad or something, which has since gone missing.  That would have been the normal way to get in, and would have left all the traps and hazards functioning.  I imagine the voice-activation was an emergency override, opening the door and deactivating all the traps.  Seems a bit backwards to me, but no doubt the original builders had their reasons."

[Ninja'd by wierd.  This should happen just before what he said; it fits well there.]
