Weird awoke with a start, sat up quickly, and banged his head on the canopy of the cargo compartment.
Gizogin was knocking on the side loudly to rouse him from his reverie.
"You comin' along today?" Asked the doctor, peering in the the now open hatch.
"What time is it?..." he muttered. He didn't feel rested at all. He ad been forced to mop out the tank the night before to remove the stickly red funk that happyface's demoniac mug has barfed all over in there, as well as take yet another bath that day, this time with somebody with him, to keep the damn spooks away. It had been unpleasant, and overall, not restful.
"It's daytime!" The doctor said enthusiastically.
"That wasn't helpful." He scolded.
"Well, unless you're coming with us, and can sleep through driving over open terrain without shock absorbers, it's time for you to get up."
Weird groaned. If there was any doubt whatsoever about how the gods felt about him, this was clear evidence. He'd never get a peaceful morning. He stirred, and nudged Rikod awake. The poor bastard had enjoyed the same nighttime excitement he had, and was trying his best to sleep it off too. On the bright side, the relief camp would be empty now.
"Hey....Rikod.. its time to get up.."
"Go awee..." he muttered as he rolled over.
Weird rolled his eyes and shook his head. He didn't blame him, he wanted to sleep too.
"Naw, seriously. They're gonna start the tank man..." he said, nudging the comatose dwarf again.
"Godsdammit!" He bellowed, and slowly sat up. "Caint a man gets some sleep aroun' 'ere? Whatcha wan'?"
"They're kicking us out."
"..aye.. figures as mooch." He said rubbing his eyes.
"Better get a move on, unless you're comin' with us." Smiled the doctor. A momentary impulse to strangle gizogin flashed over his senses, but was shot down. He didn't have to look so happy about this.
"C'mon, let's see if we can find some empty beds..." he groused, willing himself to ooze out of the back of the tank.
"Right behind ye..." Rikod grumbled.
"So, you aren't coming?" Asked the doctor. "We were hoping you'd come today."
"Why? What'd you find? It'd better be important... I slept like shit last night."
"..aye..." grumbled rikod in agreement, rubbing his eyes from the sun's unwanted light.
"We found a dead necromancer..." the doctor started. "And a sealed vault with a very heavy metal door. We were hoping you'd come have a look."
Dead necromancers? While he's half-dead himself from the endless barrage of bullshit from this week? Dealing with the potential of a dangerous, zombie raising haunt didn't sound very much fun, but he couldn't well leave his friends to face that prospect alone, nevermind about whatever damned vault they'd found.
"Allright.. I'll come-" he muttered. "But I need to check on some things first."
"Take your time, we're packing things for the trip right now too, that's why we had to kick you two out. Can't load the tank with supplies while you're sleeping in the hold. We let you sleep as long as we could."
"Thanks..." he moaned. He really needed to get or make some sunglasses. This was rediculous. "Rikod, do you feel up to checking if the kiln's cooled or not? It's alright if you're not."
"Naye..." he drolled with his eyes shut and a hand over his face. "Ye have too much excitement 'round ye. I needs a break."
He nodded. "Good news is that the barraks room is probably empty--" he said trying to be helpful.
"Didn't you know?" Asked Gizogin, still smiling. "Eric got down into the living quarters last night. Said most of the rooms are still good, but not all. He slept inside last night."
Wierd's eyes fluttered and twitched, but only for a tiny fraction of a second.
"If that's true Rikod, if your room's not useable, mine probably. Second door on the right, just passed the stairs. I know it's got crap on the bed though. Saw it when I escaped. Just shake it out on the floor, and don't touch anything. I'll clean it up later."
Weird hadn't decided if Rikod was really a friend or not yet, but he had stuck with him over the past few days, and that meant something at least. If there was a bed to sleep in, he'd let him borrow it if it was safe. "Just make sure it's really safe to be down there first. If not, just grab the pillows and sheets, and find a spot in the barraks."
A weak, but genuine smile flashed on the drowsy dwarf's face for a breif second as he acknowledged with a weary "aye.." and wandered off.
"That's generous of you.." mused Gizogin with a wry smile. "Something I don't know about?"
Weird gave him a dagger-point expression in return for the favor. "No." He said flatly. "He's been about the only one to care enough to spend any time with me in all this mess, and he seems allright. It doesn't hurt to repay the kindness." He smiled weakly. "It's the little things that really mean something."
Gizogin laughed the "I think you aren't telling me everything--nudge,wink" laugher. "If you say so."
Weird shot the dagger-espression a second time. Gizogin just raised his hands in amused defensiveness to diffuse the question, the smirk never leaving his face. Damn doctors...
"I'm going to go check that kiln." He said, tilting his head and cracking his neck in 6 places, before tilting it the other way, and getting the same result. "While I'm gone, try to remember anything you saw about that door you said you couldn't open, so I can think about how to make it budge."
"You do that-- we'll be waiting. Just hurry back, alright?"
"Yeah..yeah...." he said, stumbling through the daylight sun toward the river... there seemed to be a lot less activity today...
