Mrhappyface started banging his head against the hull of the tank, causing a muffled *clang*. Hopefully Wierd will get annoyed enough to try and knock him unconscious again and may drop the mug by accident while doing so. Or he could accidentally overcharge his glove and kill Mrhappyface. It was a long shot, but eitherr way was fine.

[Adamantine rebar, it's like normal rebar, except instead of steel and concrete it's adamantine, steel, and concrete. Few things could be stronger, or more expensive (Other than a pure adamantine wall, but try getting that much adamantine.)]

[We'd need a lot of thermite to get through that door if it turns out to be several feet thick. Besides, Thermite works best when placed on top of things, right?]

Eric was climbing out of the pit for the night, along with the five dwarves who had spent their day clearing rubble with him. The first z-level of the fort wasn't in as bad of shape as they'd initially thought. the main hall had of course suffered not one but 4 different collapses before the next rampway down to the second level, but the majority of the rooms up there besides the farms were small and well-supported. However, they'd been lucky in one sense of the word; there was a medium-sized room that had lost about three quarters of the floor, leaving about 6 feet of space on one wall on which a doorway had rested. A massive hunk of rock that had existed there under the room, covering three z-levels of solid earth, had simply fallen, and crashed through several stories, before falling into the cavern lake hundreds of feet below. This was particularly bad for anyone that happened to be anywhere near it when it fell, ufortunately.

Tomorrow, the fun would start; They would first make a ladder, and then a stairwell down into the abyss, from which they could access the remnants of the fort.

After sitting down for their alotted meal of a few fisherberries and nasty-ass fish, all the dwarves and forumites-still-present spent their last waking hours chatting it up. Unfortunately the main topic of discussion, and a very controversial one at that, was whether or not they should just give up and leave. Out of the 60 or so dwarves left alive, about half of them were fed up with the constant disasters, the deaths, everything. Wierd tried to talk some of them out of it, but everyone he talked to, no matter how respectfully or sanely, just inexplicably became angry. Recalling his own conversation with Wierd earlier, he noted that he had suddenly gone from entirely jovial to fighting the urge to impale Wierd's head with a pick, for no reason whatsoever. It was almost like Wierd was causing some sort of emotionally-compromising effect on everyone around him but that Rikod fellow. Regardless, nobody else could really negotiate with them either.

In the end, about 25 dwarves swore they'd be packing their bags in the morning, and hoofing it out to the nearest human town - a three day hike, and a month-long exodus from there to the mountain homes if they managed to secure a ship. But they'd probably just build it. Many of them were farmers, and they claimed a portion of the food stocks and barrels, almost equal to the portion of the populace that was leaving. It was looking bad, but the last thing they needed was a real fight. Tonight, the excavation team and quite a few of the loyal dwarves, including Eric, would be sleeping in the excavated portion of the first level of the fortress. Some jackass outside was banging on a hunk of metal.

You could draft the human soldier, or use him to free up a miner in the military.  He can pick things up quickly.  See, Milling with Siege Weapons.

I'm just bringing this forward, just as a reminder of what survived the crash.  Would spoiler, but the images would screw it up.

Dragonic General:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Human Soldier:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
(note:due to his liking of pikes, he added a bayonet to his gun)

Dwarven Mechanic:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Those that survive are:the general, a human soldier guarding the ship, and a dwarven mechanic with advanced knowledge of the workings of the ship and weaponry (not the core however).

In terms of equipment: the crystal with my message, the one with my last will, one of the rifles with ammunition, their armors, a socket wrench, pipe wrench, and a powerdrill.

[Why you make people hate me so? :(  they aren't reacting to any mind control you put them under are they? They wouldn't have had much exposure to my char.... he's been off in left field making ceramic goods for 2 days.... just a curiosity.. when did he try to talk to them? He's had his ass glued to a rock for 8 hours.]

Weird shot awake.

There was a terrible banging and muffled moaning coming from outside the tank. It couldn't be a night creature; there were two of them in the tank. Rikod snored loudly from his side of the compartment against the cabin wall. Curious, he slid open the observation slit, and peer out of the tank.

There, in the moonlight gloom, was the prostrate form of mr happyface, still tied up, and clamoring desperately to open the cargo compartment door.

With a moment of harsh and stark terror, weird realized there was a dull wet warmth beside him. The cup was weeping moisture again.

In anger, he banged against the tank wall and yelled at the dwarf outside, but to little effect. In desperation, he went to the partition wal beside rikod and banged on it, hoping to rouse X from his hibernation.  He sure as hell wasn't going out there.

The reverberating steel next to the ceramicist's head was too much for him to sleep through, and he woke up with a start swinging and cursing, catching weird in the crossfire.

"Get yer grubby mitts offn me ye pervert!" He responded impulsively, before realizng what was going on. "Weird!? What in Armok's name be ye doin!?"

Rikod had a mean right hook, and had caught him right in the ribs, completely winding him and sending him against the far wall.  He saw stars, and struggled to get his wind back. In that time, the banging agains the side of the tank resumed.

[Somehow I don't think Wierd blew a hole to the caverns, which would be at least 25 z-levels below the soil. Given the amount of time we've been here, I don't think we've dug out a huge complex going down quite that far. After clearing the major blockages, almost the entirety of the fort should be accessible. Now that we've gotten in, we should be able to recover our supply of pickaxes. Stone debris can be remade into stone bricks.]

Vemini heard the commotion and marched over to the tank. "What is going on over here?" He saw MrHappyFace banging on the tank. "You! Stand down!"

Knowing an edit would be ignored, I will say that these:
a socket wrench, pipe wrench, and a powerdrill.
are on the mechanic's tool belt.

Vemini heard the commotion and marched over to the tank. "What is going on over here?" He saw MrHappyFace banging on the tank. "You! Stand down!"

I think I posted somewhere that the soldier went searching for Vemini, so he could get some work in the militia.  The soldier could find Vemini now, and assist.  Wouldn't fire off his (currently) limited ammunition.

X's eyes snapped open.  He hadn't shut off completely this time, because he'd been nearly full anyway.  After the last time he'd nearly run himself down, though, he'd resolved to keep his reserves as full as possible.  There was quite a lot of noise coming from the back of the tank.  Someone or something was banging on the side, and he heard a loud thump in the cargo bay.  He stepped down from the driver's seat silently, his body poised to strike if needed.  He saw happyface, arms and legs bound, banging his head on the side of the tank.  Quickly, he built up and released a surge of magical force, picking up happyface and throwing him a good twenty feet away.  X calmly strode over to where he landed and picked him up with one hand.

"Mrhappyface," he said conversationally.  "Nice night for a stroll, isn't it?  It's strange, though, that one such as yourself would be out enjoying it, when he should be imprisoned for his crimes.  Tell you what, I'll let you explain yourself.  Make it good; your banging woke me up, and I'm often cranky when my nap is interrupted."

"Help! I don't want to be sealed inside a wackass crystal prison! Or bound into a weapons or clothing for that matter!" yelled Mrhappyface rolling about.

[Fun fact!  The ETN would have destroyed the *entire* fortress if it hadn't been jammed into the portal room. Because the portal was open at the time of detonation, most of the pressure wave from the explosion was forced out through the portal and out to the other side, like a shaped chage explosive. In this case, the compromised portal room had fracturing from being the epicenter of the quake, and the hard bang from the bomb just gave it a real good shove. This is what caused the subsidence.  The stone lost integrity and fell in. The remainder of the pressure wave blasted out the uncollapsed corridor and out the front door. So, any rifts into the cavern network would have been mostly from the geological disturbance, and less from the bomb, though the bomb may well have contributed.]

[@Wierd: I came up with it to explain why you made my dialogue go the way it did. I dunno, really :P

@Hugo; The fortress isn't necessarily volumous, but we do have cavern access. I guess it could have been just one section of the fortress where there was a significant enough amount of open space that the rock smashed through what did stand in it's way, which could also have been damaged. It wasn't a little boulder, either. It was a three-story tall section of stone 6+ meters in either horizontal axis. The bomb could definitely have provided just enough extra vibration to dislodge extra material and let it reach all the way to the cavern. This is at the other end of the fortress on the horizontal axis, though.

Did we ever assert that the first cavern is a whole 25 z-levels underground, though? I could be completely forgetting something Zanzetkuken said about the site he embarked on... :o]

[I'd assume that the soldier reported to Vemini many hours ago, and it currently on the night watch on the other side of camp.]

Roead strolled into the night. He wished he had been buried with some longland tobacco. Of course, dwarves had never heard of such a plant, typical, and he doubted anyone this far north would have any for trade either. Someone as pickled as him probably couldn't enjoy one properly anyway. Suddenly, he heard an unearthly laughter all around him. "Bloody hell, can't a bloke go for a walk? Show yourselves, ya bastards!"

Various horrible, impish creatures crawled out from between the trees, forming a circle around the mummy. Suddenly, they began to hurl vicious insults. "Hey," one of them croaked, "why are you so wrinkled? Are you a wrinkly old man? Oh, I bet you're so tough, coming out in the big bad woods at our hour. Whatcha gonna do, gum the monsters?"

If he had eyes, he would have rolled them. "Clearly you do not know who you're messing with, you little shit. I'll give you five seconds to figure it out, then I'm going to pluck out those disgusting lidless eyes and shove them up your ass."

"Wait, are you... dead?"

"Oh, you think? Course, don't know what else to expect from a brain that thinks up such pathetic excuses for insults. Really, an insult to insults everywhere." The boogeymen stared at him, confused. He crossed his arms. "Yes, I'm a godsdamn mummy. No, I'm not going to tell you why I'm out of my tomb, we'd be here all night. Now, why don't you get your arse-faces out of my face, and tell all your little friends that I'd better not hear one more cackle tonight, or gods help me I'll curse every last one of you, then shove flaming pitchforks up all your arses. And don't think those of you not technically having an arse will be safe. I'll find a way."

The bogeymen were taken aback by the seething mummy's outburst. Wordlessly, they backed off and dissolved into the night.
