The merfolk might find they suffer form a little disability we landlubbers call "legless and with skin that can't hold in the moisture." :P

[More mouths to feed?  Hooray!]

The tank roared up to the river, its treads kicking up sand in two great plumes behind it.  Gizo X spun the tank around, bringing it to a screeching halt with its back to the water.  He opened the door and hopped down from the driver's seat, landing in a crouch.  In the back of the vehicle were four wooden barrels, a significant number of the ones that had been available after the collapse.  Gizo X pulled them out, two at a time, and set them by the riverbank.  Only then did he appear to take any notice of the two figures digging a ways off in the clay.

"Hello wierd!" he called out.  "What're you digging for?"  As he spoke, he hefted two of the barrels into the river and began to fill them up.

The taller figure looked up at the sound.  "Ah, Gizo!" said wierd.  "Hello to you too.  Rikosh and I are just digging out some space for a kiln.  We desperately need some pots and bricks and things."

Gizo X pulled the now-full barrels out of the water, and put them back in the tank.  As he began to fill the two remaining barrels, he said, "Yeah, that we do.  I had to fight with Eric to get these barrels for the hospital.  He's trying to get everyone organized and working, but it's slow going."

Still digging, wierd grunted in acknowledgement.  Gizo had noticed some tension between wierd and Eric, the few times he'd seen them together.  They rubbed each other the wrong way, it seemed.  The barrels now full, Gizo lifted them into the tank with the others.  He replaced all the lids, then shut the cargo hatch on the back of the tank.  Finally, he got back into the driver's seat and set off for the infirmary area, much more slowly this time.

[It would be perfectly plausible if you fired the lightning in bursts up and down the river, basically sweeping it across. The bottom feeders (catfish, crawfish) will still be alive.]

HugoLuman, going over to see what was going on, stopped as he smelled the fish. "Damn, I'm hungry. Hey, you guys need any help?"

How would you like to have a latent planeswalker spark?  It will activate during the crisis coming, in about 14 hours.

Huh. My new phone does work from Pensacola. Anyways.

Happyface fell through the chasm. The heat and the crimson appearance faded nearly instantly as he descended into it. After only a few seconds, it seemed to turn into a deep, ebon abyss. Thoughts flew through his mind.
"Was this really a mistake? Was I tricked? Is there really no better world than this? How long have I been falling? Have I simply just woken from a dream?" he thought rapidly.
He looked upwards in vain, trying to spot the cracks in which he fell. Was this his punishment then for trying to seek the impossible? An eternity of frigid dark? Mrhappyface screamed.
His own voice seemed to be a revelation itself, proof that he did exist. He screamed and screamed, the sound penetrating the void. Then, his voice was gone, and all was light. He felt a burning heat above him.
"Well, at least I know where bad folk go..." he thought before the shockwave knocked him unconcious.

Mrhappyface opened his eyes. No darkness, just a beautiful bright blue above. He looked around, wincing in pain from the ringing in his head and ears. The landscape was a barren wasteland of a'a lava stretching to the horizon.
"Can't see what part of this is heavenly," he muttered to himself. Maybe he just came out the other side of the world?
Groaning, he righted himself. It would be a long and slow trip in this terrain. One wrong step in the lava fields, and a twisted ankle or deep cuts would be lucky. He squinted his eyes, trying to view anywhere for shelter. Righting himself, he started the half jog/crawl to the haven.
Then on the horizon, he saw it. A white church, emerging from the wastes. With a smile he started the lonely trek, his only companions the rock geese and crevice spiders.

[Try to avoid turning this into an MTG RP. Crossovers should be used sparingly. Yes, I know CW made a lot of them, but he does that because he can and they give him his sick kicks.]

The priests continued their hushed debate, but the murmurs grew too quite for Oliolli to eavesdrop upon. So, looking for things of further interest, he left the temple to explore the city. Night was falling quite fast now, the sun just a brilliant orange glare on the horizon, and the stars out in full brightness. A beautiful night. The city did not seem to be going to sleep, though. Along the streets, gas lights atop stone poles lit up and bathed the city in soft light. It did not seem to grow cold, either; a pleasant, warm night.

Oliolli looked at all the buildings. There did seem to be vaguely roman air to them, if only because of the style of the pillars, but something else too. He could find similarities to many styles from his world, but this was unique. Many of the buildings featured courtyards and wide arches, quite southwest mission-style. The roofs seemed octagonal or rounded, like sideways cylinders. All was smooth and even, made of immaculately cut stone. The streets and most of the ground seemed paved with square stone blocks, some having mosaic brickwork of floral design in the middle. All the walls were engraved to some degrees, some with a single small symbol or simple design, others with a detailed scene, though none nearly as fine as the prophetic wall in the temple.

Everyone seemed to be wearing very loose clothing of light-hued cloth, mostly robes or shirts and pants, many with large poncho-like coverings. Oliolli walked down the streets, following a throng of excited looking people towards the center of the city. He noticed that, occasionally, there were people standing on the corners, wearing painted helmets of shell and ivory, and carrying what looked like... guns. These stood around, occasionally exchanging greetings with people. Guards? Policemen, maybe?

Mrhappyface noticed something strange upon his hike. There didn't seem to be a sun, just a single shade of blue, as if the sky was a painted dome. Where the light came from was beyond him.
Regardless, he reached his destination. The double doors of the church was open, revealing a courtyard with arched pillars and a belltower in the back.
A...Spanish mission? With what seemed  Its white clay finish stood out in stark contrast with the black and dark gray of the surrounding landscape. It seemed abandoned, but the fountain in the center still flowed.
Strange.
"Is this supposed to be heaven or hell?" he thought as the mission bell tolled.

The work was hard.

The 3 fishery dwarves had set up a rotation schedule. One would haul fish, while the other two cleaned and dressed... then when the batch was done, the one fetching would rotate to the next in the queue.

Weird and his new partner in crime set up a similar arrangement, one digging out the kiln chamber, while the other rested while making large coil-based pots from the excavated clay body.

Hours passed, and slowly, the nasty pile of dead fish vanished, to be replaced with neat rows of stoneware clay vessels drying in the sun.  Weird was just putting the finishing touches on the anagama's chimney flu, when hugo showed up, asking if he could help. He suggested helping the fisher dwarves haul the wheelbarrow.

He didn't seem very enthused by the idea, but decided to give it a try, and before long was towing the cart instead of pushing it like normal. The lack of grasping appendages meant he had to be hitched to the barrow like a horse, which was the source of the protest, but the rate of fish removal greatly picked up.  He would likely end up doing a lot of hauling that way if he wasn't careful. Weird doubted that he would be unhitched after the fish were all processed. There was a lot of stuff that needed hauling.

"Do ye really think il' work?" Asked Rikod, for what seemed the 100th time. The potter was used to working with much smaller kilns, much like egyptian ones. Huge, multi-community ones like anagama were not used in dwarven culture, and naturally, the dwarf had no experience with a technology completely alien to this universe. He was clearly quite interested in the idea, but also suspicious if it would work.

"Its worked for thousands of years." Weird said. "Its a very ancient design. This is actually a really primitive way of building one too. The better ones are made of fired firebrick, but this will have to do."

"But it'll take forev'r ta dry oot!" Rikod protested, and he was right. Leaving the kiln to dry by its own devices would take weeks, which they didn't have. Instead, he would have to be reckless, and slowly heat it to dry it out. It should work if done slowly and carefully, but it would be painfully easy to destroy the kiln walls.

"We'l have to slowly heat it wet to be of any help fixing the fort." Weird admitted. Rikod's eyeballs bugged out of his head.

"Ye cannae be serious!" He protested, and he was right. It was seriously tricky business heating wet ware. It tended to explode at worst, and crack horribly at best unless you were super paranoid.

"I think I can control the heating good enough to keep it from cracking out inside." He said, but he really wasn't too sure of that either.

"This I gotta see..."

-------

It was nice being in clean dry clothes, but he still felt like he had mud caked in his hair. The pigtail glove hummed along, as he delicately puffed bouts of fire into the stoke hole in the front of the wet clay kiln. He had to keep the temp below boiling, but still good and warm inside, and let the clay release its water at a faster than normal rate, but in a uniform and controlled fashion. A thin whisp of steam curled out of the hole he had dug into the top of the hill. What you couldn't see was the long flu inside at the back of the kiln it was connected to. From the outside, all you could see were the wet-brick front, and the vent hole on the top. Slowly but surely, the kiln dried and gassed out. He controlled the temp by carefully regulating when he shot fire in, and closing the input hole again.

He and rikod just sat there as the shadows grew long on the horizon, waiting for the kiln to dry and then reach bisque temp safely, and chatting about this and that.

Turned out Rikod had 2 daughters, and a wife. He was curious why weird was staunchly against settling in with a fine dwarven woman and having little ones of his own. He didn't seem to be able to grasp that his wizard co-worker just had no interest, but finally chalked it up to just being a wizard thing.  They discussed different firing techniques, and how the technique he was using on the kiln was similar to raiku ware, another approach and technique Rikod had never even heard of, let alone tried. Salt and soda glazes came up too, and Rikod asked him how he knew so much about ceramics, while dedicating so much of his time to so many other skillsets. Weird didn't really have an aswer to that... he just had so many interests, that he didn't feel happy without a bunch of irons on the fire.  Rikod chalked that up to being a wizard thing too.

The sun slowly began to set, and the temp inside the empty kiln had risen slowly and nearly imperceptibly, but now it had reached a point where weird simply let it have it, and the brick on the front walling up the opening save for the tiny fuel hole was blazing a beautiful crimson in the cool night air.

He wondered how the others were holding up. He couldn't leave the kiln. Firing an anagama took 8 to 12 hours. He would be there all night. He had wanted to test his enchantments in a more controlled setting, but so far it had held up well. He didn't want to stress it too far though, and did his best to use it only on its lowest rate of conversion, which turned out to be just about right for driving the kiln.

It was gonna be a long night.
