Well, I think that covers everything.  It was nice talking to you, Dragon Mechanic.

Now that that's taken care of, I can finally finish the Mk. X.

The door to Gizogin's office suddenly flies open, scattering carefully laid out gears and springs on a nearby table. "Alright, wanker, what the hell is going on here?" Kofthefens, standing behind the mummy, mouthed "sorry" to Gizogin.

Rubluflis scratched his ear irritably. Too many were gone. Eaten by centipedes no doubt, as if the centipedes' stench wasn't bad enough. He recalled what Cullulablol had said, "They're just centipedes. We can squish them under our feet." Just centipedes my hairy earlobe, Rubluflis thought, as he scratched his forehead. Cullulablol was dead now. Probably growing more legs already.

Vemini rolled on weird's shoulder. "Put me down. I think I can stand now." Weird obliged happily, as a figure in a suit of armor is very heavy. In fact, he had trouble lugging around his own armor. Vemini flexed his arms. "Yeah, I think I remember how to do this now."

"So, Oliolli, giant, scintilating centipedes?" said HugoLuman. "I guess we should do something. Got anything flamable, Weird?"

"Maybe."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

One more strike till your dead Eric...  Most likely by ninja dragon assassins!

Bring it on! I can take on the world with a xCopper pickaxex and ‼natural stone walls‼ (Coincidentally I've always wondered how the hell cave-ins generate boiling magma and why said "boiling magma" does not generate ‼dumbass miners‼.)
-------------

Eric was astounded. Joykill had responded to his order with a flat "no."

That wasn't possible as far as he knew. The slab mentioned nothing about possible failures to guarantee an outcome. He had asked cog to impale his toes with his pickaxe, and he followed the directions without hesitation despite obvious pain. He then told him to forget the incident, which he did; he suddenly had no idea how his pickaxe had come to pin his foot to the ground. He told him that he had been a fool and tried to dig for foot fungus, and should go talk to gizogin about it. Which he did. To this day, Cog still believes he had a raging toe fungus infection at the time that had made him delerious and believe that a pickaxe could be used to cure it with a solid mining strike. Gizogin of course diagnosed him stark raving mad after finding no infections, and prescribed some sort of therapies to help cope with his overactive imagination. Eric had even told Corai to get lost in the terrifying deserts, or to look for copper or something. The little bugger did it, without even questioning it, and still believed it was his own idea, and had so far been wildly successful in the endeavor. Even Zanzetkuken was convinced Eric had actual authority, even though there was no apparent leadership or decision-making body in the fortress; everyone worked on what they felt needed done, and most of them worked in multiple fields, Eric just worked on designations of mining and construction alone to keep everything simple and not risk endangering anyone for lack of understanding what other designations were being planned or carried out, and to make sure mineral resources were monitored appropriately. 5x5 bedrooms with domed ceilings were architecturally sound for the surrounding bedrock and geologic activity compared to the boxy rooms or shafts Zanzetkuken was insisting on, and competing designs in such a tightly packed fortress would mean disaster in the future.

But here was Joykill, after having given Eric access to any explosives available just because Eric had asked for it without so much as a "what the hell do you need them for?", refusing to cooperate on the terms of necromancy.

"Uhh..." He was thinking quickly and irrationally... "Forget that... You should teach me the secrets of life and death anyway, Wierd."

"No. There's no way in hell I'm going to do that."

"Ooo-kay... I'll be going then." He started walking away, but turned and stated sharply "You know what? Just forget about all of this. It doesn't matter anyway." Then he turned and started to sprint up the stairs.

The scary-ass metal-elf Vemini turned back to Wierd, "What the hell was that all about?"

Completely oblivious, Wierd responded with "What was what about? Aren't you paying attention to me when I'm talking? Thari was-" The noise trailed off as he climbed the stairs, the architecture of this place rather soundly dampening noise at a distance. Should have targeted Vemini with that spell as well, he figured, but that had revealed something important; he hadn't failed to cast the spell either time nor was Joykill immune to the noble-god's gifts, but for whatever reason the topic of necromancy was off-limits. He had to find a boulder to pluck away at while he worked over this. Maybe he could start tearing the place apart while he was at it.

"Well, by the looks of the place we'll need more than just a pile of stabby, cutty and smashy pieces of metal. Maybe we could just cave the place in, if wierd can't fill the place with fire."

Human town far away
He knew he was no longer welcome at the Barracks. If he returned there, the others would kill him. Simple as that. So Oliolli had to find a new body in this world. He believed he had found just the perfect one.

So, Kofthefens, who's this friend of yours whom you've so kindly shown into my office?  [To the steaming mummy:]  Forgive me; I don't believe we've been properly introduced.  My name is Gizogin, I'm the doctor around these parts.  What can I do for you?  You'll have to excuse the gears all over the floor; I'm afraid my work can get quite... messy.

"I have to ask, where did the crazy bitch pick up necromancy anyway? Ancient stone slabs hanging around from the founding of the world don't just turn up when you stub your toe you know." Asked joykill, walking beside the iron clad elf.

The pair of them were quite a sight standing next to each other. Black rusted iron, with bits of polish still showing, and black PVC rubber with white zirconium-aluminum oxide ceramic plates clanged inharmoniously on the blue-green stone flooring, as they discussed the situaton.

"If she has one here with..that..particular bit of magic on it, it could be disasterous if somebody without a fair bit of reservation got their hands on it. As far as I know, everyone in our fortress knows how to read, and that could spell trouble."

"What about that dwarf that you were just talking to?" Asked the elf quizzically. "He JUST asked about your necromancy quite pointedly, and seemed more than a bit frazzled when you told him no."

"What dwarf?" Asked weird in confusion. "Nobody's asked me about necromancy today..."

"Oh yes he did!" Retorted the elf. "He asked twice, and both times you flatly told him you would do no such thing!"

Weird looked confused.  "Look, if somebody did ask me that, which they didn't, that is what I would tell them. Necromancy isn't a child's game you play at. But nobody has asked me about it that I can recall, and trust me, if they had, I would."

The elf looked really frazzled; eyes darting behind an iron face. "Look, he was this high...."

Kodkod found one, and loaned it to Thari. I do not believe she herself read it, though.

HugoLuman felt the mental waves in the room, vibrating Weird's psyche. He was very sensitive to such disturbances, being a ghostly image composed of psychic energy. Looks like Weird is being manipulated by someone, he thought. If only I had been paying attention to that conversation and not pondering the books I snuck out, I might have caught who. I'll just file this under "investigate later."

On the way down, the four ran into the scorpion elf again. He stared at weird for some time, briefly glancing at Oliolli then dismissing him. "Well, dwarf, I know we had our differences, but I suppose I should thank you on all of our behalves before you leave. You have freed us from thralldom and restored our free will, and for that we can never repay you."

"Don't thank me yet... I still have work to do."

This was the hard part. For some reason, offing the poor wretches that wanted to die hurt him. It was a kind of moral dilema. It needed to be done, and necromancers were duty bound to kill people that needed to die. It was in the contract. But for some reason, this was different.

"What do you mean?" The tinman asked.

"I have elves to kill now." Weird said solemnly.

"What!?" He demanded, but the scorpion elf cut him off.

"The weaklings that couldn't handle what that bitch did to us want to find peace in the afterlife. That killer you're leaning on said he would help them."

"Is that true!?"

"Yeah........" weird breathed. 'Its true. If they had weapons in their hands, and they were intent on hurting people I consider innocent or important, I wouldn't have a problem with it... but this is different. "

"You aren't really going to go through with it..........are you?"

"I said I would help them, and have tried to talk them out of it. I will ensure their bones and souls are not misused, and I will make sure their passing is peacful and painless. That's all I can do."

"That's very cold." Grunted the tinman. "I thought better of you."

"Serves you right, you're far too trusting. He'll probably raise their bones to dance for him like that bitch thari!" The scorpion elf crooned, pointing his finger.

"If you have a better solution!" Weird growled. "And I said I would make sure that DIDN'T happen! Cremation renders the body useless to necromancers!"

"Let me say the burial rights of the old ways first." Said the tinman. "I'm probably the only one here who stills remembers them."

Weird nodded, the dropped his backpack to the floor, and dug out the now mostly empty brown glass jar of chloroform.

"There is a garden cellar in the basement. One side is marked "Pain," the other "Pleasure." Parts of it are open to the sky through green glass. I know that Thari used to keep a many plants there, including belladona," Vemini said.

"What is that? A poisonous plant? Well, I hope it is painless. One of the 16 or so has already tried to hang himself."

(Personally, I'd imagined Vemini as a cold, "Doesn't care much about anything" type. Nevermind now, the story must go on!)

For anasthetic purposes, chloroform has to be given carefully. You can easily kill the patient.  This is because it causes acute suppression of the central nervous system.  Wetting a cloth with it, and draping it over the victim, will first cause a chemically induced coma, then resperatory and pulminary failure, as the brainstem shuts down.

They die painlessly.

Belldonna, on the other hand, contains psychoactive alkaloids. (Specifically, atropine and scoplolamine) It causes death through other means.  It is known to cause "oh shit, its a scene from the exorchist II!" Type hallucenations, and can cause people to die from cardiac arrest.

Naturally, you'll see why weird picked what he did from his bag.
