[HugoLuman cancels post, distracted by sulfur hexaflouride demonstration :D. Now I have to think of a way to incorporate that gas into the story, in some very minor way. Weird would probably be involved]

Elemental fluorine is dangerous to store, and is a prerequisite to producing sufur hexafluoride.

Sounding like you've been shot full of bovine steroid and testosterone since you were 2 is fun and all, but not really worth keeping elemental fluorine around. :D

Might be producable from fluoride containing minerals though.

[Just thinking about it as a throwaway gag at some point. Might be involved if we ever try to flouridate our water supply.]

You use .02% sodium fluoride for that. :D

And despite what the touchy feely interest groups railing about child tooth decay statistics claim, fluoridating the water supply in countries having access to fluoride tooth paste has absolutely no statistical health benefit (well, it does in people who don't brush right...), and instead opens the door to a nasty bone and tooth disorder called "fluorosis".  It causes brittle, yellowed, pitted, deformed teeth and brittle, osteoporosis and osteoma susceptible bone tissue.

In uganda, where they don't have easy access to tooth paste, it changes lives.

In the US ane Europe, where toothpaste costs 10 cents, and can be bought in bulk cheaply, it has no medical benefit.  There is more than enough fluoride ion in standard toothpaste to harden tooth enamel and prevent decay.

The main proponents for fluoridating the drinking water supply comes from public health institutions wanting to improve public health for low income, low education population demographics, even if doing so introduces a new public health risk factor. It is my opinion that educating the public would be a better solution than spiking the water supply.

Just sayin. :D

....its easier to make the toothpaste.

Also, if the minerals to get the fluoride from are present in the soil, the groundwater is already naturally fluoridated. :D. Adding more is just plain dumb. Lol!

The discovery that fluoride ion in water combats acid based tooth decay was discovered when trying to identify why certain rural communities in colorado had radically lower incidences of dental caries despite equal dental hygiene and care. The discovery of fluorides in the ground water frome fluoride bearing minerals is what initiated the research.

Well I definitely wouldn't. Screwing with chemistry and public health are Wierd and Gizogin's respective duties.

Now, figuring out indoor plumbing would definitely be a project we can worry about in the far, distant future, when we aren't all camped out just inside the outer walls and 1/4 the fortress, namely the living and work areas, isn't either collapsed or too dangerous to stand around in.

Indeed.

The next few days are gonna be "yay! lets camp in the outer courtyard, slam the outer gates shut, and survey all the structural damage! Oh yeah, Ice and Fire boy, you and dragon breath get to make magma since somebody upset the magma stack, and it's unsafe to use for magma casting! We are v1.0, so the scarcity settings are in full effect, including the new mining drop rates for stone collection, so we need you two making masonry goodies. Sorry about that. Everyones gotta do their part! (also, it will make me feel better if I know you are busting your humps fixing this shit.) --Your pal, Eric. PS, Fortresses dont fix themselves! Snap to it!"

YAY for us!

Why do I get the feeling that Oliolli will miss Zanzetkuken's Doomsday entirely? Several in-story weeks later...

[Well it's not quite that drastic. Hugo is still crippled enough that he gets to spend his time in the infirmary section of camp until Gizogin says otherwise, and with the magma stack (and water. not good, that. Maybe you can use your magic to provide drinking water, since we lack booze now. Better come up with a booze spell quick! hehehe.) disrupted, there's no source of material to cast anything anyway, so we won't be using obsidian production to source materials. Work on the tower is halted, besides maybe hollowing out the 7 stories that have been built (which won't offer much living space or material as it's intended to be mostly solid), and the only source of materials is to dig down and start rebuilding immediately. Too bad nobody is going to be brave/stupid enough to go near your lab.]

Maybe we can get some supplies from our Neighbors. I don't know about the kobolds, but our friends in the microline tower have booze and probably a lot of fruit, seeing as they have a large magically-accelerated greenhouse. Possibly some mead, too. Thari sure liked her gardening.

There's a carp infested stream nearby. Wierd has lightning. Just scoop em out with a net.

As for building materials...  We are in a sedimentary lowlands type biome, with nearby mountains. We should have sand and clay deposits on the surface.  I am also a hobby ceramicist. while it would be boring as hell, it might please eric to have wierd sit down and fire an anagama all day to make bricks. I don't think toady fudged with the clay gathering labor like he did stone drops. :D

Just some things wierd might mention in the crisis management consult he intends to make shortly.

Those mountains, though nearby, are still 8 or so miles away. It would require wagons to be practical mining. V 1.0, Carp are more realistic, but I would be afraid of tigerfish or large catfish. Those have been known to kill people IRL. Naturally, elephants would still be capable of being very dangerous, they're just not aggressive. Not that we seem to live near them, though. I don't think wildlife will give us any trouble.

As for me making magma, we'd have to run tests on that dark liquid to see if it's flamable. I don't know how to breathe fire. I could still crawl through lava though. Wierd may or may not be able to melt rock.

He demonstrated it twice inside the fortress. It could be argued that the walls he burned through were weak sedimentary stones, like lime, calcite, sandstone, puddingstone, mudstone, etc... that have lower melting points than pure silica.

However, even with crappy "can't melt stone" sustained output, he could still fire a kiln. It would just be tedious and boring.

Still, I don't want to be outside when the sun sets and the bogeymen come out.
