"Let's just say that if said 3rd party attempted it, they would be prying bits of his corpse out of the walls for years." Weird grinned. "Dwarven engineering at its finest. He has the goods, but I have the key."

Weird reached into the front of his shirt, and held up the bizzare mechanical contraption that served as the key for the lock.

"Fancy stuff." Weird mused. "Only I can use it too. That package won't be opened before christmas any time soon."

Gizo X spoke up.  "If I might interject?  Wierd, is it correct that Hugo already knows the secret you entrusted to me, and that I am therefore at liberty to discuss it with him?  Otherwise, if you do not wish me to be privy to this conversation, I can take my leave."

"It would make things easier.  Hugo is the original curator of the source materials you orignally requested. You are under no obligation to share with him, but it would greatly ease the situation I am in with your confidentiality, given that I am caught red handed."

"Might as well tell me," said HugoLuman. "I extracted the most sensitive of Thari's volumes to a secure location when we first went to her tower. What've you got to tell me?"

[Sorry, I actually have to turn in for tonight.  Wierd's pretty good at X's dialogue, if he wants to finish up this conversation, but I'm too tired right now.]

[Technically I extracted them, and you're just racking up overdue library fees like nobody's business. Although we don't have money anyway. And it's not a library either, just one random shelf full of lunacy that nobody ever even reads or acknowledges. And I still have her journal/My Friend, Kodkod. That's some scary shit. A detailed journal depicting the entirety of her fall from grace, and the insanity created therein.]

There were five volumes in her personal chamber, 3 of which contained instructions in her very scary magic. The library you found was full of religious and philosophical books about the Way of the Goddess, as well as some chronicles, all transcribed by the as-yet unseen Apprentice, and also some other thick academic books by other people. I really did round up all the sensitive volumes before anyone else could get to them, since I was concerned about their misuse.

"Very well then. In light of the circumstances... but you must come in here. As has been clearly demonstrated, the hall is insuitable for the task at hand." Said X, opening the door wide.

"Be careful of the equipment. My creator has been busy creating additional laborers for this facility, and they are quite sensitive during construction. Mind the tank."

With effort, hugo and weird squeezed into the tiny office/machine shop used by X, gizogin, and the G-bodies for R&D, general maintenance, and hospital clerical duties. With all the extra equipment, and the tank, it was no small accomplishment. Gliding over to the door, X locked it tightly, and depressed a switch on the wall, evacuating the inside of the metal door and frame, effectively sound proofing it.

"Now.. about the information we have exchanged...."

***

It had taken X a fair amount of time to break down the basics of his research and experiments in mechanized magic, and hugo had shown almost palpable terror at wierd's explanation of his own, recent contribution to "science" in that department, given that X was quite eager to collect feedback data from the device's operations, and weird had indulged him.

A smoldering block of steel stock material, a terrified dragon, and an excited robot later, weird and his draconic conspirator were ready to depart, despite hugo's almost frantic insistence that he NOT leave that glove there.

Weird tried to explain that X was really his best hope at solving the regulation problem, an assertion X was rapt to assert the affirmative to, but Hugo flat out told him that he should promptly destroy both artifacts, and any notes on how he made them. The last thing this fortress needed was yet *another* smoking gun.

Hugo made a convincing argument... but no ammount of stuffing would put these genies back in their bottles. He hoped hugo was wrong.

"Well, then, Wierd, I have another matter to discuss with you. Something less worrying, I hope. I don't know if Oliolli told you, but my flight wasn't a complete failure. I managed to spot the tower, just before I stopped going up and started going down. Didn't see it for long, but I do know that it should be around the distance I expected, and it's in the hills to the northwest."

"Any idea what we would expect to find in there?" He asked.

He had snuck out at night with a torch, and had attempted to explore the ancient ruins beneath the fortress a few times, but the halls and rooms were choked with hardened volcanic ash deposits. It was very much like pompeii, including the grisly reposes left by its former inhabitants. He had halted all attempts to clear the ash with a pickaxe, when he smashed into his first, and only, hollow body-shaped cavity.

He had ratted on himself to Eric over it, suggested using plaster to reconstruct the appearances of the dead people, had been both reprimanded, and praised for the idea, then forbidden to be near the area. Eric had put together a research team... if you could call it that, and excavation had been slow.  Several plaster "bodies" had been recovered, though the details weren't heavily circulated.

"I guess it depends on how old it is. There might be people's remains, technology, engravery, whatever. The carving seemed to indicate that they had light bulbs and possibly PDA's or laptops. It also showed that they got killed by goblins or some kind of invading force, so probably not weapons. Whatever's in there should be interesting, though. If there's anything left."

"Might be worth a look... but I don't want to go alone, and don't know anybody that would be interested....besides fucking eric.... and besides, you're the only one who's seen it, and you aren't fit to travel.  I promise, when you're better, we'll go see it, ok?"
