So. Catapults?
« on: May 16, 2012, 09:25:46 pm »

I know everyone is excited about weaponizing minecarts and dropping anvils on folks, but with the new stone and flying object rules, have people done any checking on what the actual weapons we've had forever can do now?

I'm working on that right now. I have a catapult against fortifications that fire out into a short 3-tile wide hallway filled with dogs, kittens and puppies. Gimme a few minutes.

Alright, I have some stuff. A catapult made with 1 well-crafted part, one exceptional part and one finely-crafted part. The weapon is manned by metalsmiths with no siege operating experience.

Shot 1, quartzite boulder: missed, no animals were in that one straight line at firing. ::)

Shot 2, marble boulder: flew past the animals and slammed into the wall, shattered, not recoverable. I might've been seeing it wrong but I think it passed right on their tile and still missed.

Shot 3, marble boulder: passed right onto several animals' tiles and did nothing. Went into a wall and shattered.

I'm just going to call it now. Catapults are still useless.

I just tested ballistae and catapults - no change from previous versions.

I think ballista bolts might still find a use as dropped or cart-a-pulted weapons.

Bummer. I was hoping we could at least fire at lower Z-levels now.

Hmm. Dwarven shotguns fired from another Z-level?

Ballista bolts (arrows?) deal blunt damage due to a bug, so dropping spears or axes is better.

If the stone fired from a catapult drop down after hitting a wall, it could potentially land on something on a lower Z-level and cause injury.

that should work in combination with the stone recovery stuff. Just set a catapult to fire continuously at a blank wall so the stones land in front of your entrance during a siege. Make sure you can close everything off to insure against flyers and you're dropping stones on the heads of your enemies

a memo to the 2nd poster in this thread: unlike balista bolts, catapult stones only damage something on landing, not on flying through the creature. Since they only properly aim at hostile or wild creatures (which they are unlikely to hit since they never wait in one place long enough), your shots were set to "as far as they can go", unlikely to damage anything

Aim at something hostile. Friendly fire rarely happens with catapults. It's why you can stack rows upon rows of them behind each other.

If I may, I recommend using cobaltite & ilmenite ammo if you have it.  Those are both very dense due to being metal ores (albeit ones you cannot smelt into cobalt or titanium).

You could also use the ores you can smelt (horn silver, native gold/platinum, etc.), but I never felt right using such expensive ammo.

Stonefall traps may also be more useful now, though I do not know of any tests offhand.

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

I'm really going to implement my idea. With being able to bring huge quantities of stone there much faster, legendary siege operators can cause a rain of stone to fall. Catapulted stone may not do much damage, plus the stone is destroyed, but this way you can recycle the stone and stones falling some z levels should cause some damage. and with a crew of legendaries, firing rate should be great. The only thing to worry about is flyers that don't get hit by falling objects.

you could probably do it with balista too. I wonder which one will cause more damage when falling down. Do balista bolts damage multiple squares when they land? science!
