Military dwarves committing kamikaze against my orders
« on: May 16, 2012, 08:44:45 pm »

My military suffers needless deaths constantly because they don't like to stay in their burrows like I tell them to. Instead, they like to go out of their way to get killed by besieging goblins/sandraiders/violet xelics (I use the Civ Forge mod). How do I stop this? I'm risking tantrum spirals with this crap.

Soldiers are bloodthirsty maniacs; once they've engaged they won't quit till the target is dead, or they are.  if they haven't engaged anything yet, try using a station command from the squad menu to control where they go, instead of a burrow.

Note you don't want to leave them stationed too long or they might wind up dying of thirst on you.

Listen up: making a thing a ‼thing‼ doesn't make it more awesome or extreme.  It simply indicates the thing is on fire.  Get it right or look like a silly poser.

It's useful to keep a ‼torch‼ handy.

Don't put them anywhere they have line-of sight with a hostile, use corners, bridges and walls to help achieve this.

All my military dwarfs carry copper flasks, so they don't have to worry about going thirsty anytime soon. What I'm mostly concerned about are my marksdwarfs since they need to have the enemy in sights to prevent them from entering the fortress. Besides my military, I have traps that will do nothing against flying mounts. I should probably build ceilings for that, but I'd have to do a lot of rearranging.

Unless something changed drastically in that last release flying mounts are still bugged enough that unless you get really unlucky and the mount paths over the wall by sheer chance then they aren't really a danger. More of a liability since they prevent the goblins from charging blindly into your traps really.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

My bat-mounted goblins just fly around and freak my dwarves out, but never come into the fortress.

Try walling in your military, or getting them underground.

LoS problem fixed.

Yea if they don't have a path to the enemy they can't charge. Keep the gate closed so your marksdwarfs stay safe and your melee dwarfs cant herp derp into a massacre. Obviously once you get used to controlling them you can stop hiding behind your walls and take the fight to them. Or at least let them into your courtyard/hallway/wherever you've prepared your killing floor.

A nice little pen or curtain wall down one side of the entry straight to station your melee squads in or behind helps keep em from charging. Then as the enemy run past your dwarfs see them and engage from right on top of them without being shot at. Pulling the bridge up after stops them from going out to far too.
