Surface water consists of maybe a few pools, there is water in the caverns though, as well as Tears of Armok scattered around, I suspect it won't be too hard to use those. I'll post the save later, not on my home comp. Or I can just post it after playing out the first turn.

Ok, here is the embark screen

All races that are turned on by default are here, plus Illithids and the evil versions of all the friendlies, we are also closeish to a Tower. All friendly races exist in this world, which is Garden of Gaia with no modifications to the worldgen parameters.

Here is the region save: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=6383

I am currently paused on the first day of Spring, year 100, I had loaded it up to reveal and confirm that the demon fort is actually present, just in case I had hallucinated or something, it is and I have concealed it.

So, should I start playing a year or should there be further discussion on the starting 7 and stuff I should pack along? I don't think there needs to be much myself, but we should talk dwarfing at least.

Personally i hate the ''Very deep soil'' areas ...
some or deep soil is fine by me

I like deep soils, it gives a chance to build moats and such, with multi-level planning, not distrupting the fort layout itself. 4x4 embark maybe? I like space.

About dwarfings: I don't want to be in the starting seven, if possible. Those tend to drop like flies... Give me the first sensible male military migrant though, and give him a zweihander. Any profession, really - he'll learn eventually, but some basic dodging and such are essential for not dying.

I don't want to be part of the original seven either. I would rather just dwarf myself when it gets to my turn.

I'd stick with your previous location if possible, with the demon fort and all. If water is available in ponds, that should be enough.

That was my thought, we do have ponds, and we are in a warm, temperate area, so rain should keep them filled. If worse comes to worse we can always go Tear of Armok mining. There should be a few down there somewhere before the first cavern level.

@panopticon: I loaded up your save and did the 3x3 embark shown, and I loved it. There is a nice small hill to the south east, and the little ponds surround a flat area that would be a perfect place to build the tower.

@everyone: as for 3x3 vs 4x4, personally I would love to do a 4x4, I usually do 4x4 on my own forts. However I have quite a beefy computer and we are going to be testing a tower that is planned to be very tall, and very deep with a huge population of dwarfs as well as an underground structure with possible 2000 more entities.

Also bear in mind 3x3 is the masterwork default, where 4x4 is the dwarf fortress vanilla default. Lets go with 3x3 so we can keep this game open to anybody with a computer and not anybody with a nice computer, as well as to test and see if 3x3 is a nice default value for masterwork to use. If in the end we find we would have rather had a different size that will be good feedback onto the current status of masterwork.

@oliverosky95: Thank you for taking the time to scope out additional embark locations, however I am pressed for time and you did not provide saves for each so I'm not going to hunt them all down to scope out myself. Besides the first one from panopticon is quite nice. The king is pleased with your work and those sites look like nice backup sites. When we run this fort into the ground we will go down your list of embarks for our next attempts.

@Everyone:

The king(me) has 5 different teams of dwarfs ready to start this fort. A talented team of Engineers he can send to build fortifications, A military expedition with a doctor and war dogs, A team of smith castes with an anvil and lots of coal, A team of drunken craftsmen who will undoubtedly drink like crazy on the way and arrive without booze, and A supply caravan who already left, but got lost and wandered into the area. The supply caravan has lots of supplies and are ready to go however they have no miner.

Please discuss with yourselves and choose carefully. You have 30 hours to make a unanimous decision, or to place your vote (Midnight UTC -7 hours; Daylight Saving Time). At that point panopticon will be allowed to start the game, with the chosen team of dwarfs. You will find the teams of dwarfs listed when you do an embark on the pre-made list.

@panopticon: Before you start the game could you go into your data\save folder and rename 'region1' to 'Masterwork-Succession-Fort' Please use dashes, not spaces since spaces will cause the game to crash for some people. This way the save-zip will always have a unique-descriptive name and when you load the fort in Dwarf Fortress it will show as "Fortname : Masterwork-Succession-Fort"

@Everyone again: You should load up dwarf fortress, start an embark and play with the name generator. What will we name our grand new fort? The name should be fitting in dwarf and human speak?

I vote for the engineer embark because it will make a ''decent defense'' fast

BTW the military expedition will be good against the 3000 undead units in the curious structure (?)

Nah seriously, my vote for the engineer party miner expedition

EDIT: about my dwarfing... i want to be the chief medical dwarf (if possible)
and the name of the fortress would be something like: angelictower or bloodytrials

@zenerbufen: You might want to open a new threat for this, and I will gladly link the Masterwork Threat to it. Again, sorry that I couldnt find the time to make this here happen, hope you guys get the ball rolling regardless.

Yeah, I'm planning on doing a new thread for it. I was thinking of keeping this one around for discussion about the fort, and keep the other just for updates, so the story is easier to follow? I'm not sure though.
