Wheelbarrow
« on: May 16, 2012, 08:05:28 pm »

Im using wheel barrows to transport wood on the surface to a stockpile on the surface that feeds a minecart rail that dumps into my main storage area..

But I noticed wheelbarrows will only carry one piece of wood. Same with stone. It actually makes hauling much longer than its should.. Anyone else notice this?

Wheelbarrows are intended to be the smallest, most inefficient part of the hauling system. Just imagine, wouldn't you only be able to fit one tree worth of logs, or one massive rock boulder into a wheelbarrow?

Valuing life seems too close to an aesthetic rule for me, I think.
Only in Dwarf Fortress is the value of life placed as "aesthetic."

Im saying hauling without the wheelbarrow is actually faster than using it

For logs, for barrels of food, and for anything else light, yes.  For stones, wheelbarrows are faster.

I'm noticing dwarf slowdowns with logs, wheelbarrows do speed the process a bit.

Should dwarves use wheelbarrows to move stone from as stockpile to build a wall/floor, etc? Or am I going to need to put a very local stockpile when building external structures with any real speed?

you should now change all rocks into blocks before building, after which I don't think they need wheelbarrows anymore. One rock makes one wall, one rock makes 4 rock blocks and thus 4 walls
