I play solo throughout my adventures (except for undead minions if I go necro). Bogeyman management is all about planning your trips. Learn exactly how far you can walk in a day on your largest map (usually 4 or 5 tiles, depending on how fast you move) and hop from safe spot to safe spot. Safespots are the lairs, mountains, and beaches already mentioned, but deserts and wastelands work as well. You can walk during the night or sleep outside. It's not a good idea to go more than a day without sleep though, as I'm pretty sure drowsiness penalizes your skill rolls, and you need them to be high.
When sleeping outside, keep in mind that even if bogeyman won't get you, bandits or packs of predators can still do so. However, you can hide from them by sheltering yourself in the terrain. Start looking for a slope when you think you'll need to sleep soon. One z level of height is all you need, and probably ideal. Find a narrow, one-tile wide gully, preferably one that bends sharply so the end can't be seen from the entrance. A dry pond or depression will also work if it's less than 3x3. Sleep in the tightest, most well-hidden low spot you can find, and everything should pass you by in the night. Even if an ambush happens, chances are good that you'll still be out of sight and able to hide as soon as you're awakened, and then make your escape or turn the tables on your attackers.
If there is no bogeyman-free terrain between you and your destination, you can still make it. People suggest walls of campfires, but they're not reliable, and I never use them. I've seen bogeymen walk right through campfire checkerboards and navigate around all sorts of convolutions and bottlenecks to get through my fire walls, so I doubt the claim that they won't approach within one tile. If they catch you sleeping, you'll be stunned for the first turns, and as a result your skill rolls may be too low to save you. If I'm in bogeyman country, any sleeping I do is during the day only (in gullies as above), and I travel at night.
The safest but most boring method of lasting the night is to wait in a gully for the bogeymen to show up, and then sneak away from them, but not so far that they vanish and reappear nearby. This is something like 10 or 20 tiles. Then, just pace back and forth or in circles until the sun rises, or mash "." (but you really should pace so you at least increase your ambush skill).
On the other hand, if you want to be the badass ranger that fears neither dark nor wild, then continue sneaking towards your destination, but keep in mind that every 15 steps or so, the bogeymen will teleport to the front and sides of you, so take it slow, and get used to backtracking and veering in random directions. Patience is essential here; the night will last a long time when moving like this. Bogeymen will often spot even a Great or Master ambusher within two tiles, and once they spot you you'll be fighting them until morning or (more likely) until they overwhelm you.
Good luck, and may you teach the night to fear you right back.
