Spawn a minecart, hop in, speed up, crash into a tree, die. No bogeymen for you. Having high dodge and not travelling alone helps too (and sleeping near beaches and in lairs).

7 campfires? Why not 4, one in each direction? If they can approach diagonally, then place them diagonally, and at worst a flier can reach you from overhead, but they only take one whack to knock down.

Just beaches and mountains. Towns won't help one bit, and if you're already at a town, why the hell are you travelling when you can just sleep it out?

Level up Ambusher to Legendary, and pray the RNG you find a necromancer tower and are able to sneak past the zombies to the slab. Gotta have 1 point in Reader at character generation, too.

Raise dead makes getting companions easy  ;D

You will never sneak past any tower that hasn't been heavily depopulated. Them zombies. So many of them.

with higher than adept at any slashing or piercing weapon and some armor (easily available now) you have no need at all to run from bogies. Just make just to dispatch them one by one.
With vampire adventurer, i'd just fight them regardless of skill. You'll never pass out, and that makes fighting bogeymen over 9000 times easier.

Always get a companion with you, bogeymen won't spawn if you have at least 1 companion nearby. Sneaking (running behind a tree) once you hear that cackling would stop them from directly attacking you, but not from following.

Make sure, that you Charge at them to knock them down, then aim for the lower body. This grants an advantage, as their lower body is generally weaker than the rest. Also, take them on in single combat, not by a group.

Did it. They didn't notice me as long as I didn't bump in them, and the ones blocking the path could be laid to rest by stealth-throw kills.

Which makes it sometimes impossible to cross towers when stealthing. Zombie walls, zombies behind doors, zombies on stairs, behind hatches - EVEN ZOMBIES IN YOUR CEREAL!!!

Of course, Dwarf Fortress difficulty is subjective. What works for one will not work for another, and so on.
