Mysterious Ruins?
« on: May 15, 2012, 11:18:53 pm »

I mined into a cavern today and found 3 z-levels of generated walls with molepeople, snailmen, and other oddities. Strangely, they were labeled corpses even though they were clearly moving around. What is this structure? Should I avoid it? Be worried about it? Or should I just ignore it? At this point, all of the 'corpses' have departed the map.

I'm playing fortress mode by the way.

sounds quite curious. Try checking the inside with some military dwarves, maybe it contains any valuable items?

I don't quite have my military up to snuff yet, but I'm definitely tempted to check it out when I get going.

Way to ruin the fun, jaxler. You are supposed to say, "Hmm, I wonder what it could be? Maybe there's treasure inside!" And then Aerneth plays along like he doesn't know what we're talking about, and we all get a fun trip to the circus. Sheesh.

The moving "corpses" is just what DF calls zombies.  That's what you found underground: a bunch of zombies.  They're a bit tougher to kill in .34 from what I understand, doubly so if you're in a reanimating biome.

Sounds like this is working as intended to me.

sorry man, I just prefer not to be a troll. Anyway, he said he dug into a cavern, not HFS so this is probably a bug, and do not intend on being a jerk to the guy if this is a bug.

also, press K and tell my what the walls of the ruins are made of, if the name of the stone it's made out of starts with 'Sl' and is not slate, then you hit a demonic fortress.

which is not a bug. The corpses are a but unusual, usually it's only the underground animal people.

My guess is that the caverns just intersected the underground structure.  Having never found one, I have no idea how common this is, or if it's intentional.  I suspect there's not much of an active attempt in map generation to avoid it though.

In any case, the zombies are your immediate concern.  If they all wandered away then I think you're in no immediate danger.  I believe more might be able to wander in if they wandered out though.  Playing around inside will give your militia some training on the zombies, and there may be other things inside you can claim (I actually have no idea if that part of the underground structure is always generated).

Um, curious underground structures are always in the caverns. Where else would they be? It's a ticket booth to the circus, how could it be in the circus?

I thought they were generated often times where they didn't actually intersect with the caverns in any way and you had to accidentally mine your way to them.  They're always above the magma sea, but not necessarily connected to the caverns.

Again, never found one, this is going completely on hearsay.

Never heard of one being completely encased, but I guess this might be the case if the caverns aren't open enough.

1 every 16x16 embark area
zombies don't wander far from structure
zombies don't replenish (though I don't know if that is also with raising biome)

This has been a feature since before 34.x and has nothing to do with necromancer towers and because they were relatively rare and hard to find, much sought after

You should find a trap inside it. Deconstruct it.
