War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.

We need a consensus, or at least a majority.

Your name is... Gosh. Titles of nobility are strictly prohibited in the Military, at least for anything below the LtC Ranks. Your claims as heir to an ancient nobility does not help, though people might joking refer to you as Lord Gosh in casual Times.

The Test Squadron is set up for, well, testing purposes. Testing would include field tests of mundane parts like power plants or armor plates, to more illustrious things like weapons, or battlefield test of Mechas of our own or the enemy. The squadron is also increasingly used as an AI testing and deployment agency, as the Mecha command seemed to favour a mass production doctrine, by complementing cheap mechas and rookies with advanced AIs. Usually such tests are made in an simulated environment, but as the war goes on, test pilots like you also have to do real fighting - at the same time as testing.

"...Out." As you leaves the mission briefing with data downloaded to your computer/personal civilian communication device, you recalled your current mission as briefed.

You are supposed to pilot a AXM-03 "Newton", armed with an experimental sniper kinetic rifle, to provide sniper support in an operation to take over a fortified position. The new weapon is known to be inaccurate, as it is still armed with the old aiming subroutine. You are supposed to provide aiming data in the progress so the gun calibration routine can be improved. You will be told to retreat when enough data has been collected.

While you are also given the standard-issue rifle as backup, you are not supposed to be in the heat of battle, and should prioritize in protecting the highly valuable weapon in your hands. However, should you lose your mecha, or the rifle to the enemy, it will be counted as a failure.

You are supposed to go to the hangar in 4 hours, but in the meantime you are free to tour the base.

The base, codenamed "Marco Polo", is one of the more important base of the Army in the area. As you leave the briefing room, you quickly leave the HQ building, which is rightly populated by people who abhor the presence of a "lord" in the camp.

The door of the building is guarded by an AM-4 "Cromwell", named after the man who overthrew the king, despite strong opposition from the Royalty. It is regarded as one of the first operational Mechas in the Army: it looks ugly, does not come with a auto-aim subroutine which is now standard (and retrofitted into), and does not have overhead cover for the pilot, but it is perfectly suited for guard duty, as he can quickly react to mecha or human-sized threats, and it is more enough as a deterrence.

In front of it is the great yard of the base, with a few mechas and vehicles - tanks and such are still heavily used in complement with Mechas - doing routine drills and exercises. Elsewhere you see two mechas practising the art of melee combat. Their moves are clumsy at best, and are no match to your silky execution. But they did the basics right: trying to disarm, find an opening, and use your sidearm or melee weapon to sent them to kingdom come, or at least sever something.

Shame that they are piloting AXM-01b "Smith+"s, which is only available to less "replacable" personnel. "How come they are already part of the elite?" you muttered to yourself. The Smith, and their upgrades Smith+s, reflected the pinnacle of the previous quality doctrine. On Specs they are twice as powerful as the Newtons and carries half as much more armor, not mentioning with the luxury of extra carrying capacity which makes them much, much more versatile. They are also manufactured with much better accuracy and love, unlike the Newtons which are basically a roving weapons platform.

Humming a tune and thinking of the mission, it actually does not make sense to carry such a high powered rifle on the Newton, since it does not really have the structural stability for it. No matter your mecha will be rigged to sustain higher forces, as you heard in the briefing. The gun itself is a monster - it can take out a Smith+ on one hit, at least theoretically speaking, and should at least seriously damage an enemy mecha if the conditions are right. It would usually take a few bursts from the standard rifle for a similar effect.

You still have 2 hours left before mealtime and mission, and judging the circumstances, you can only either do either one of these: Fully read the briefing papers, so you understand the tactically situation more clearly, or going to the hangar and take the mech around for a ride, so you have a better idea of how the modification affect the handling. Of course you can do something else or nothing if you choose to.

You read the briefing papers on your Dorm Console.

The main operation is an assault on a fortified position held by the enemy. They have a few mechas - each can hold its own against at least 2 of us - and they are equipped with a few heavy anti-mecha cannons, which is practically guaranteed one shot one kill. There are no concrete reports of what is spotted at the base - but they are expected to consist of usual enemy mechas, which identification and data is available on your onboard computer.

We have at least 50 Newtons from 10+ squadrons, and 10 Smith/+s as elite support. The newtons are armed in the usual way - that is, Standard issue rifles. The Smith/+s might take heavier weapons - they are elite squads, they can pick their own loadout - are charged with defeating the defense.

And you - as part of the 2-strong test squadron, is to arrive a bit late and take out valuable mobile targets. You are free to use any sniper tactic you can use, but you are advised to stay close to your partner, and always be ready to retreat to the line of battle if needed. Telemetry data of your shots will be received by any of the smiths - they are informed of your operation - so you are always free to move after each shot, but that means your secondary objective is to keep the smiths safe. They will try to do the contrary, but should never be counted on.

You also looked at the specifications of the Sniper gun. Its power is still classified - its part of the test, anyway, but it is known to have a range of 1 to 9 squares.
Since a lot of subroutines are only in their beta stage, loading and aiming will take 1 turn and you have to keep stationary (can be standing, knelt or prone), and has to be done before each shot. Accuracy is, as briefed, worse than ideal, and even worse against running enemies.

Your partner is codenamed "Piston" and will have a similar loadout to you. You are nominally in command of him, but he is known to disobey commands they seemed to be suicidal.

Primary Objectives -
- Test the weapon to satisfaction of field command
- Keep your mecha and weapon intact
- Keep your partner alive

Secondary Objectives -
- Protect the Smiths
- Capture the position

You finished your meal, and uploaded the war songs. You can play them on the fiddle, but the music is on trumpets, that they always sounded too modern. But at least it is good for the spirits, and certainly essential. You are expected to inject a drug in order to let you go to sleep while your mech go autopilot on the way. You can't fight immediately after waking up without these music, you mutter to yourself.

So just fast forward to the mission.

"Autopilot disengaged." a cold voice came from the computer.

You are now, as it speaks, at the field of battle. The others have already engaged in battle; shells are already flying around.

On your front, about 20 of you have already formed a front, held back by 3 "Billy"s. You read from the computer that Billies are much stronger than a Smith, but 20 Newtons should be able to hold on its own. beyond that you see a hill: you noticed the bunker for the heavy cannon, which seriously hampered the battle capabilities of your side. It is more a battle of attrition than anything else.

On your left there is a stadium. The smiths are trying a breakthrough from there, and a few of the enemy forces have moved around the are to stop this outflanking. Stalemate, in other words. You won't catch much attention if you just dance around there, though.

On your right is a small hill. forces are few here, but it is a vantage point over the main battlefield. This would be a very good sniper's nest, but the risk of the cannon firing in your direction is equally, good.

Your choice?
