baby's impaled in training area
« on: May 14, 2012, 10:00:46 pm »

I have repeating spikes setup in a main hallway.   I got the animals out of the way by assigning them to pens and locking the doors.  However... my babies, my poor babies!  I've had about 7 baby deaths so far.

Should I restrict them to burrows?  Will they just crawl around downstairs?

I think mothers always carry their babies and children always follow their mothers. Burrows won't do anything.

Just think of it as dwarven population control.

yeah, turning your main hallway to a danger room is bad.

The title of this thread is one of those things that I can only really see happening in dwarf fortress :p

commercial games that allow for indiscriminate violence usually have godmode turned on for children/babies.

that's exactly what it is, but just like neo pets, I care for my virtual children (it is a game of sims + rts you know).

There's got to be something I can do.  I was thinking about using minecarts and ensuring that those with babies somehow use it.

Fixed that for you.

Won't anybody think of the children?

Well we did. We have the slabs and coffins ready.

is there a way I can create a burrow around the training spikes, and assign the moms to it.  Or somehow create an inverted burrow (around the spikes) that excludes the mothers.

Currently that area is high traffic, and only the babie's are a problem (as I mentioned earlier) the pets are all sectioned off accordingly.

Come on guys, think creatively here.

So far the only tools I think I have are burrows.  I have to figure out a way to restrict the mothers from using that area, almost like I can give them a different pathing option to use.

Update:

I think that's it.

I only have one entrance/exit, but... I think I can just create a burrow underground that is called "housewives" and restrict mother's with children down there.  Just like in real life ;) j/k

if you really don't want this to happen, don't allow women into your militiary.

you missed the main hallway part, that's where the danger room is.

You could just burrow every mother with a baby someplace that has food, booze, and drink until the babies grow up.  Of course that would make them a bit useless for a year.

so there's no way to make some dwarf's use certain routes vs others?

Could I create two overlapping burrows, one for everybody, and one for mothers.

The mothers wouldn't have access to the training room, but the alternative hallway

and the rest vice versa?

Think that would work?
