It's seriously affecting their ability to harvest plants from farming plots, although they did eventually get them harvested.  It looks as if they won't haul anything in their hand if barrels are allowed.  A Harvest Plants job is generated, a Dwarf walks to the plot, and then leaves with No Job.  I posted my save on DFFD for Tarn Adams and reported it on Mantis, but now my report seems to be lost in some kind of Session Invalidated limbo.

I hate that - I don't know what causes it, but if you take too long or something writing it, it won't accept the report.

Nothing to do but copy-paste everything you wrote into notepad or something and copy-paste them back into a new bug report.

Except it was already posted with one comment, to which I had replied.  With some confusion, I will admit, because I remembered having left the food stockpile without wheelbarrows and it had three again when I reloaded the game after uploading the save.  However, both the comment and my reply were there.  Then I went to see if anyone else had commented and I can't, even though the report shows both on My View and under Unassigned.

Edit:  It's there with Firefox.  Just not with IE.

Oh boy...

Just what is the point of tying a wheelbarrow to a stockpile in the first place?

Why can't dwarves just look for the nearest wheelbarrow, rather than using the wheelbarrow that you know is going to involve walking the whole length of the trip from item to stockpile twice just because it's going to involve finding the wheelbarrow and the barrel at the stockpile and moving it to the target item before moving it back to the stockpile?

Because it means there's nothing to prevent every wheelbarrow in the fortress being commandeered for one task while leaving every other task impossible in the meantime? Which would admittedly be a fairly accurate representation of a real-life warehouse environment...

That said, I'm entirely at a lost to explain the reasoning behind a limit of just three wheelbarrows per stockpile.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

Well, I agree the limit of 3 wheelbarrows is lame, but wheelbarrows potentially now limit how many dwarves can work a stockpile, which might give us a mechanism by which to distribute labor a bit. Rather than having 100 dwarves all hauling to your finished goods stockpile after a battle, you can limit that to 3, allowing enough labor for your roasts to get hauled.

The immediate challenge this seems to present is whether you can get more than 3 dwarves hauling to a stone stockpile. Clearing rooms might get really damn slow if a wheelbarrow is necessary (I don't think it is, but not sure) and if we're limited to just 3. I don't always want to create a dozen stockpiles just to clear the quarry quickly.

I think the 3-wheelbarrow-limit might be supposed to represent logistics difficulties.  Hard to keep track of too many wheelbarrows and carting paths at a time.  Bit silly, but that's my hypothesis.

Gameplay-wise, I think it's supposed to encourage us toward building multiple stockpiles across the map, linked by minecarts.

Stone can be hauled by hand, but they move very slowly.  As promised.  I was able to quantum dump a 2-level 11 x 11 cistern to a dump in the well room above, without too much angst.  You wouldn't want to have your dump too far away, though, doing it by hand.

I'm noticing that dwarves are behaving differently as well. I just had trouble with a dwarf running to construct a depot, while for no reason carrying a bin. He'd get there, drop the bin, stop building because the bin was in the way. Then pick up the bin, and when I unsuspended...another dwarf would grab a bin and repeat.

That and even though I had it set to ignore stuff outside, the second a dwarf died, another dwarf grabbed a bin and rushed outside to get his stuff, while the zombies were still there.  Its little changes in their behavior, but they're enraging since they're making the game harder than it needs to be.

And thats saying a lot.

I think that something to do with gem hauling/collecting in bins is really bugged, I have 2 dwarves running round in circles (or just around this small area) where there are no gems... I can't get them to stop and one of them is already thirsty and drowsy, please don't say "death by hauling" is now an addition to the game. (minecart deaths are warmly accepted, but being too stupid to put down the bin and eat/drink however, are not. )

Can't say I've had *that* happen yet.  Try temporarily turning off your gem stockpile and reactivating it again without wheelbarrows?  Gems are pretty light.

I've gotten the hang of things now, but I'm still having a few dorfy problems.  Like, I've set up a track leading down to the bedroom complex, where there's a major digging project happening.  The minecart is working fine, but the damn dorfs aren't using it.  I have a stockpile right next to the cart, which the cart takes stones from, carting them back up to the main stockpile when it's full.

The problem is, my dorfs would rather haul stone up a dozen flghts of stairs and across half the fort rather than just dump it in the damn cart, or its associated stockpile.

Edit:  NEVER MIND.  I figured out a workaround by telling my main stone stockpile to only accept stone from linked shops/piles.  It still accepts stuff that's just put into it by minecarts, and the dorfs will actually obey me now.

I'll have to say, the first time my dwarves picked up a wheelbarrow and started hauling stones, it was like the first time they started digging the first time I played.  It's fantastic.  Not to mention watching them "vacuum" up cloth in a stockpile into a bin is very satisfying.

Nevertheless, the farming issue - I've seen my dwarves run to the plant, the plant start blinking, and the dwarf runs back and grabs a barrel to put the plant in.  Not exactly the most efficient way to get the job done.

I didn't have a problem with wooden logs, although I don't think I had a wheelbarrow available at the time.  The dwarves operated my forest clearing operation as in previous versions.  I've only seen cages and stones slow dwarves down significantly.

Toady did say "a hauling release" so I doubt he's done with it.

I noticed my dwarves loading up the minecart, and then hauling it to the other stop rather than using the tracks. I've also had my bookkeeper try updating stockpile records while hauling clay, when my only clay stockpile had a wheelbarrow.

I am getting tons of "cancels plant seed, no seed" spam because whenever someone wants to take the seeds leftover from brewing or eating they take the entire bag.
