Sigh. Can't make shirts.

My clothier's shop can make all the normal stuff...uhh...except shirts. WTH? I've never had a fortress where a specific clothing item was missing from the clothier's list.

Doesn't matter if it's silk or cloth or yarn. Yes I have all the materials, and the correct professions on my dwarves...and everything shows up as normal in the shop except, sigh, shirts. Why couldn't it have been mittens or something? I guess I can make robes, or maybe coats, and have them do the job of a shirt?

Am I just missing something about how the fasion/textiles thing works, and this is caused by something specific, or is my fort just busted?

It might be that your civilization doesn't know how to make shirts. Sometimes this happens with high boots. Just make some other upper body clothing, like robes or tunics.

I guess you're right. Dress, coat, and robe, are the only things they can make that qualify. Come to think of it, I'm seeing that I'm missing shirts, as stated, tunics, as you've mentioned, and also vests. Dang, I guess my home civ is pretty primitive. Harumph.

The only shirt my fortress has made was the product of a strange mood.

I just asume coats serve the same purpose, make those instead and think every dwarf looks like Dante.

Any piece of clothing that is worn on the upper body works to prevent the bad thought from lack of shirt. I typically use robes, myself. Robes and trousers can all be worn with full metal armor, so I just make those and shoes.

Unfortunately, you won't be able to modify clothing that covers another body part to be a "shirt." The item type is set in the item's identification line, no entry's ID line can be changed, and the item type for clothing and armor also determines which body part is covered by that piece.

"Missing" clothing pieces are a result of the way that the entity-level clothing assignment tokens function. For clothing and armor types at the COMMON rarity level, you're certain to get at least one type for each ARMORLEVEL for each body part, but if there's more than one possible you might not get some of them.

My dwarfs also don't know shirts, but instead they know robes, dresses, tunics (which I make in place of shirts), coats and cloaks. And every migrant coming has these pieces equipped. I think that even with very low temperature of underground it is still hard to explain how they do not die because of hyperthermia.

Underground is about 8°C, which is significantly lower than the above ground temperature in my biome, around 20°C now. In freezing biomes underground can be warmer than outside, but it's still the temperature maintained by average fridge on the middle shelf.

I'm jealous, I can make shirts, but not robes, and robes are better protection

I believe that robes suit mages, necromancers and another wise creatures. Shirts or tunics fit my peasants perfectly.

I equip my military with cloaks because I always believed them to be better when equipping. Wiki says that robes are slightly bigger, so they may offer better protection. But they are worn under the armour, while cloaks are over them. Since the armour is never or rarely removed, switching to new cloaks - a relatively frequent occurrence due to wear - should be less painful than switching to robes. Still, the protection both of these offer is not very big.

Ah, right. I stand corrected then.

On topic: cloth shirt/R orders seem to keep my dwarves happy enough for now. Plus trousers and socks, of course. Can't forget how important *pig tail fiber sock* is to a dwarf.

Gender-specific clothing hasn't been added yet either, so dresses can also work. Yes, I know the mental picture of your dwarves walking around in drag isn't terribly pleasant, but it's still an option.

Also, if you don't mind a little minor modding, you can always change some clothing entries in entity_default to ITEM_WHATEVER:FORCED instead of COMMON.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.
