every dwarf is regularly pathing, so will eat up some fps. There are more ethical ways to limit children. Animals should be limited too, even when in cages they take up fps

Kill them slowly over a few season to allow the happy to return.  Also, helmets for everyone so the inevitable fist fights aren't fatal.  Well, armor for everyone (leather/bone/shell is fine) if you want to manage that, but helmets for sure.  Plenty of food, booze, and coffins, and a legendary dining room, and you're set.

I kill anyone I want in my fort all the time.  I actually have made the main entrance to my fort a danger room.  Sure I get a bit of "dwarven baby has been impaled on spike" spam, and there's no cats left, but everyone else is getting good at dodging.

If only the children would fail their dodge rolls more often...

Like any mass murder solution, this is simply an engineering problem.

Is there really anything to 'see' during an atomsmashing event though?  I don't think even light escapes.

its true there won't be a body to discover, but i would expect that if a citizen can witness the moment of death, you'll get one of the regular death notifications, meaning dwarven sadness abounds.

Atomsmashing items doesn't help, IIRC.  Atomsmashing creatures should be perfectly effective.  You don't need to get all forty in one go.  You could get them ten at a time.  The important thing is that there are no witnesses.  Seems like an effective solution to the DF children problem.
