Has anyone ever had an insane migrant?
« on: May 13, 2012, 05:39:34 pm »

I set the popcap low to get only the hardcoded waves while I did basic setup of the fortress. Eight years (and ten forgotten beast trapped in the walls) later, I raised the popcap. First migrant showed up as a cyan excalamation mark, and indeed he was listed as 'running around babbling'. His thoughts screen shows nothing other than 'has been miserable lately', and he has nothing in his relationship list but his deity.

Using version 34.04.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

He probably was from earlier, but got stuck behind someone and when you raised, migrants came freeing him. From all that alone time, he went insane. My guess.

It's likely that he was from one of your previous fortresses.

Okay, I copied, abandoned, and went looking in Legends. Turns out he was a dwarf randomly generated in 201 as an outpost liaison, which was the second year of the fortress. Going through the gamelog shows he went mad at some point, probably because I forgot to let him out (yearly backups show that the fortress was sealable by bridge even back that far).

This can be fixed, right? I've forgotten which utilities do what and with which version.

Try two berserk migrants in a large wave. The few that survived were pissed enough to go insane once they reached my fort.
edit: Related to this, I have had a migrant appear on screen in a fresh fort who apparently experienced the death of a friend (and was thus very unhappy) lately despite no deaths occurring in the fort yet (I'm sorry Armok, it was THAT new). Never knew events that occurred outside of the fortress map actually could affect a migrant while he was still travelling. I'm pretty sure I've never had a migrant before who was overly unhappy without it being in a reclaimed fort.

That should be a new type of project, making a rug design in dwarf fortress (With accurate coloring)
"And so, after many deaths and much sacrifice, someone turned their fortress into a fully functioning self aware carpet that actively sought after sources of fresh blood."

Not really. You might be able to fix it with runesmith, but that hasn't been updated to the latest version yet so I think you are pretty much out of luck.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
