Well assuming that you mean "train" instead of "trait", then it's fairly simple. First of all not everything can be trained for war, only certain animals can. A complete list can be found over at the wiki. Then in order to train an animal for war simply go to the animal training screen, select the animal you want to train, and hit 'w, IIRC. I also believe that if the animal is a tamed domestic then you might also need to assign it to an animal trainer on the same screen (or set it up for "any available trainer") or nobody will be assigned to it so it won't get trained.

the problem is, I used to be able to train dogs, but I don't have the option to train a war animal.  I have only two options, tame a small animal, or capture a live land animal.

War training is no longer done at the Kennels.  War training is done through the Animals screen.  Press 'z', select the animal tab and then press return.  Select the animal you want to war-train and then press 'w'.

You need an activity zone for war training now.  You can also attempt training wild animals for domestication.

I feel like I can't have a common training room/hallway and war animals at the same time.

It would be better if I could lock up the animals in a room until war hits.

Lock them up in a cage and release it when war hits

note that too many animals in a small room will fight and that that won't happen in a cage. A cage can hold... a lot, but won't allow new pregnancies for females that are inside (which is actually quite useful).

that's useful.

i don't want cages, as it would take too long to release them (war animals) during war.

So I'll build a wall around the pen/pasture, create doors, make them pet impassable, problem mostly solved (unless a dorf takes his assigned war animal out of the room for any reason, I guess I'll also have to unassign all the war animals from the pasture during war time).

out of curiosity why do you guys keep war animals out of the way until war?

I'm not even getting to war animals. I am stuck domesticating and the wiki is not answering my questions.

CAN I domesticate the Giant Lion Tamarind and Tigerman the elves sold me?
I have them in cages which I have placed in an animal training zone with a kennel and have assigned my GM animal trainer to them. I have even tried making there cages room but to no avail.

I have not been successful at any animal domestication so far and it makes me sad.

Sha: I don't know if its true current version, but caged animals become tame over time by just being in a cage

Animals you buy from the elves are already tame.  They can't be tamed further, but if you manage to breed them their children may be domesticated.
