Out of 118 voters:

21 Elf sympathizers. They voted saying they liked/loved Elves. (17.8%)
19 voted saying they hated Elves. Quite surprising, that more loved than hated. (16.1%)
30 were undecided, neither in favour or against Elves. (25.4%)
48 voted in favour of keeping Elves alive, as long as they were bribed with gifts and offerings of the merchant variety. (40.7%)
This could account for the overwhelming majority that don't actively despise Elves, but are discontent with the mere presence of unwanted pointy-ears.

I treat elves in function of what they bring.

Useless caravans may or may not be slaughtered according to what they bring, if they bring good stuff I am generally a generous buyer.

If they bring too much useless crap, I may either ignore them or brutally murder their caravan, although it makes useless hauling jobs, maybe I should not kill them for this reason.

Science should be done on how your relations with the elves influes on the caravan content.

Constant robbery and murders, for one reason or another, prompts more to arrive. often with ropes and more cloth than normal.

Now to brutalize them in a way to bring more caged animals.

The strange thing is, I strole from them and they responded next year with a giant perigrin falcon, a mink, a dingo, and two giant wombats.

Yeah, my general position is that elves don't really cost me anything to let onto my map, and they occasionally bring something worthwhile, so I'm going to just remain neutral.  I did vote the "if they bring exotics" option, because I'll like them then, but I won't hate them if they don't - I just don't care at all.

I'll eyeball what they bring to trade first, then start actually trading if they bring something worth having.  Otherwise, I just leave them confused sitting around the trade depot wondering why nobody's coming and nothing's happening.

EDIT:
Oh, and occasionally, they do bring some really cool things I like to have that aren't exotics, like *<<*Barrels*>>* with about a half dozen decorations.  I once got a barrel with dyed cloth decorations and a black diamond engraved with a goblin being chopped in half by a dwarf.

I figured that was kickass enough to trade some dwarven syrup roasts for.  Too bad there isn't a thought bonus for drinking booze from a royally decorated barrel.

The Toad hops in mysterious ways.
This pure mountain spring water is indispensable. Literally. I'm out of paper cups.

So you could kill all of the Elves and just leave their pack animals alive?

To get the stuff the animals must die.

Aye, but you can build them as containers I believe, so at least it can be used to add to the value of the room, even if that's not as cool.

A lovely elven lady walks into the trade caravan, the dwarven men elbow each other and whistle and swoon. Urist McLoverbird walks up to the lady and... Then you realize adrogyony runs rampant in elven culture. Its like playing a guessing game.

I...I see no problem with this..
