How do I feel about elves?

Elves are enjoying a temporary reprieve.

My experiences with them are tempered by the 40d days, where a single speckle of blood on that pigtail sock will result in them getting huffy, and requiring absolutly meticulous examination of trade goods.

A single leather, wood, or bone decoration turned an elf kosher trade good into an elf forbidden one, so you had to be very watchful when trading with elves, and they didn't bring much except wood, berries, and bins of crappy green cloth.

On top of that, they would send a literally insulting "diplomat" to you every year to see how many "innocent trees" that I "slaughtered", outright call me a monster to my face, mumble curses under his breath, and then dictate how many trees I could cut, including mushroom trees where no tree banging elf perverts go anyway.

These experiences have me harshly biased against the pointy eared plague.

Currently, elves are disgusting hedonists who live forever and churn out babies like mad during worldgen, and quickly displace every other race by sheer reproductive power. The only saving grace is that they practice the "modest proposal" in terms of dealing with their excessive progeny.

They don't complain so heavily about trade goods anymore, and they stopped sending the raging prick diplomat, and now they bring large and giant creatures in trade...

So, for the moment, they've won a reprieve against the the immediate magma purging system, but I don't forget, and I am always watchful.

I know elves for the menace they really are, and at the first sign of resurgence of their vile antics, they get the lever.

Wait, blood? I've never heard of elves refusing to trade goods based on contaminants, just based on materials and decorations. The wiki claims "They also no longer mind purchasing blood-soaked items", though I'm not certain when that was ever the case (perhaps prior to the introduction of ethics, which is when they stopped caring about animal products since they now consider killing animals to be "justified if self defense" where it need to be "shun" or worse).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I try to keep the peace with them. I trade them jewels, metals, and rock stuff, they give me Giant Eagles.

Something about the fact that my Dwarves have been at war with the Elves for quite a while gets at me. I seem to have stumbled upon the age where the wars are over for now, and the Dwarves are picking up the pieces whilst the Elves devour their spoils.
Cannibals.
Still, as long as they amuse me with lovely animals, they'll live.
But if I don't get more Scorpions, Kingsnakes or other lovely critters, this hazardous peace might change.
Dorf crafts go in =/= Elf animals come out

I started playing in 40d, and I never had Elves refuse my trade good because of blood or vomit on them.  I was carefully avoiding trading goods like that because I had read in the forum that I should, but then one day I tried it and they did not object.  I think it was removed by version 40d.

Edit: 23a may be where that came from.  They apparently would not buy things decorated with materials of animal origin in that version.

I honestly don't care.  Elves, human, dwarves.  If they're good then I trade.  If they suck, I have drowning pits in the depot.  Except next time it'll be minecart cannons.

Wait, do you shoot them with the cannons, or do you load them into the minecarts, then shoot them?

In all seriousness, the elves are my best trading partners.  The dwarves are nice for bringing me metals and such I don't have access too, the humans are mostly worthless, but the elves are the ones bringing the giant war animals, the huge piles of (ethically collected deadwood?) lumber, piles of cloth, and all kinds of surface crop seeds to keep the 'same old booze' bad thoughts away.

But I swear, I will drown them in magma and cast obsidian statues from their bones if they reject another trade because I missed a clear-class gem decoration on some miscellaneous trade good.

A lovely elven lady walks into the trade caravan, the dwarven men elbow each other and whistle and swoon. Urist McLoverbird walks up to the lady and... Then you realize adrogyony runs rampant in elven culture. Its like playing a guessing game.

Besides, I hear they have bad breathe, seeing as they eat there own kind.(Elves smell bad)

ALRIGHT MEN, WERE GONNA SAVE SOME ELVES.

You know, I don't think I'd ever send out Dwarves to protect any caravan that isn't from my own civ.

Maybe to attack a siege and the caravan is protected as a side effect... But no.

Risking Dwarf lives to save outsiders who don't even impact legends mode? Nah.

Pretty much mutual xenophobia for everything, not just Elves.

Although I have noticed a discerning lack of Elf prisoners. Screw it, suffer not the sentient-eating pointy-eared heretics to live.

I don't really hate elves at all, it's just due to the fact they don't even have a caravan escort and don't have diplomats that I slaughter them to an elf when they come. I just see it as a sh*tton of free stuff.

I currently enjoy trading with elves, It's a pitty their wooden swords are useless and their wooden armors a joke!
Diplomacy is something I miss from time to time, being able to actually agree with the pointy ears how much wood you could cut down and actually have a good relationship with them was actually to some point interesting (it would have been even more interesting if you could tell your dwarves to keep woodcutting under that limit ) of course it should also have made it possible for you to demand more wood from them or be able to "make ammends" somehow by offering a tribute.

If I do dislike something about the elves is that actually theres no Elven towns around to explore as an adventurer (nor goblin or other locations such as that) and that's something I do miss.

Even in the days of 40d, I got along pretty alright with elves. I wouldn't trade them clothes on principle after hearing about the spatter thing and I was careful to manage my decorations. Even the much-maligned cloth bins (elven cloth has noquality) were comparatively useful in exchange for the worthless rock mugs I traded them. Cloth could be used to complete artifacts, make bags or ropes, and now, it's a vital commodity used in health care. The berries could be made into exotic brews and the seeds could be cooked into meals to further boost food stocks and sell to the dwarven caravan in autumn. I haven't even touched upon the subject of the wonderful and varied beasties they bring in cages. A lot of our wood came from caravans anyhow, when supplemented by tri-yearly shipments of lumber meeting their demands was not so difficult. Forestry is a dangerous and unpleasant chore, besides.
