And for laughs, Sarranid's "veteran unit" is "Sarranid veteran archers".
I swear, I must be the only one who likes that nation.

wait, people like the sarranids?

New update, it promises to reduce the occurance of epidemics.

Unfortunately, it isn't totally compatable with my current game:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Considering that my equipment is overall better than what I had (I got a balanced military scythe, yay!), and you don't know what I had, I decided to continue.

Since Jelkala was still suffering from an Epidemic, I decided to explore the land and search for more recruits.  Remember how I found that village that sold honey "cheap"?
Well, look what I found:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That should cover the cost of new armor and steed.

I decide to follow some peasants to another town, hopefully one where there is no Epidemic:

Drats!

I continue my exploration of the land.  Exploration is what this mod is all about.  I come across the best village specialty ever:

Naturally, I buy all that I can.

My army thus enhances, I proceed to rest in a nearby castle, as my troops have not properly rested in some time, and I am slightly wounded from fighting some looters on the way.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Question time: I'm thinking of setting up a base of operations near a region that tends to accumulate iron, so I have somewhere to stash my troops while I make arms and armor.  I'll discuss the specifics for setting up a base later, but know that you don't have to pay costs for troops in a player-built outpost or fort.

Here is where I'm thinking of setting up shop:
Curaw
Dhirim
Sarrinid lands (they've got a couple of towns that sometimes produce iron, I'm not sure if any one town is a true iron generator)

Think of our first outpost as a cache of troops, a sort of investment in our future conquests of Calradia.  Where should be locate this?

Note, the mod limits us to two outposts, so the location is more-or-less permanent (demolishing an outpost is possible, but buggy).

Put the outpost in Dhirim.  I like the swadians.  Great LP, by the way.  I've never seen this mod before, maybe I'll try it out.

Dhirim, The local bandits aren't that dangerous.

About the bandits, here are my thoughts on this:

The bandits near Curaw are Tundra Bandits.  They're an average bandit threat, usually armed for melee with some thrown weapons.  Once we have Plate armor, Bastard Swords, and most importantly shields, they won't prove much of a threat.

Swabia is infested with Forest Bandits, an entirely worse bandit threat because they're armed for ranged combat.  Those axes hurt also.  However, they infest the forests, of which there is little near Dhirim, and their typical base is on the other side of Swabia.

So I agree with the analysis above, primarily because there usually are no bandits near Dhirim.  But if I actually had to chose between fighting the Tundra Bandits or the Forest Bandits, I'd take the Turdra Bandits every time.

Put the outpost in Dhirim.  I like the swadians.  Great LP, by the way.  I've never seen this mod before, maybe I'll try it out.

I like them too.  Swabian Knights for the win, and they can support that with decent ranged troops.  If I had to chose one faction's troops to use exclusively, it would be Swabia.

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it, I was wondering about the overall quality.  I hope you do try the mod, as one of my secret goals of making this LP was to increase interest in this remarkable mod.  But that is a secret, so keep it under your hat.   ;)

I actually like Dhirim myself because of its central location.  Curaw has the advantage of being literally flowing with iron at totally ridiculous prices, whereas Dhirim iron is usually costlier and rarer.  Note that one feature of Rigale is that the markets are limited in what they provide.  You can generally expect half of what you would be able to purchase in standard Warband.  Still, I think Dhirim would provide sufficient iron for our purposes.

Eh, not really that fond of Scrubians.

Tundra bandits are definitely easier than Forest bandits, just stay out of range of their throwing weapons. Hell, I don't think they even spawn with shields. Getting iron isn't much of an issue as long as you have the $$$. If you find a mining guild, they stock an infinite amount.

Swadians? More like
Scrubians.

Go with the Nords. They have badass melee troops that will beat the hell out of anything that gets too close. Unless they nerfed it for whatever reason. From my experience, Sargoth and Tihr tend to have little sea raider activity. The space between Wercheg and Reyvadin has it really bad, though.

Go with the Nords. They have badass melee troops that will beat the hell out of anything that gets too close.

And that is why the Nords die in droves on the open field.  They just never get into melee range.  Horses run them down, archers shoot them from range.  Now, their higher tier troops can survive all that, but the mid-to-low tier? Not a chance.

But I have to admit: I'm partial to the Nords myself.  I tend to join their faction when I join any faction.  They win sieges, hands down.  But for the open field, I prefer the Swabians.

One thing to consider: I've got less than 30 renown right now.  We won't be joining anyone anytime soon.  And for our first outpost: It will be constructed shortly, before we join a faction.  Therefore, it will be linked to "player faction", and not tied to anyone.  Once I do become a noble of somebody, I'll probably place our second outpost between our village and the town our village trades with, to protect our peasants.  Cool thing about outposts: You can hire patrols with them.  Nothing fancy, but the patrols can kill most bandits (I doubt they could hurt Sea Raiders).

Oh, and this video illustrated what we've been doing for the town the last couple of days...

I say we go for Curaw. Forest bandits are deadly in early game. That, and Curaw is like an iron factory.

From my experience, iron factories in Curaw sucks ass. It might produce lots of iron, but it also produces tools. The wiki lies! I've got nothing but negative profits each time I've asked the guild master about a tool business. I just went with a dyeworks, that gives me a nice 500 denars a week at least.

Well, my goal in this game is not to create a foundry, but to be a foundry.  In Rigale, we can create tools, weapons, and armor ourselves.  Even our relatively low-skill hero can make awesome shields and axes.  So we have absolute control on when and how we create items.

And the profit margin on plate armor, once we can create that, is through the roof.  I'm talking about turning a few bars of iron into armor that is worth mountains of cash.

So I'm mainly asking whereabouts to park the troops while I create items of wonder, because the longest crafting takes about two days or more.

Hm, with the guilds and all, I should probably visit the locations before closing up the voting.  You might prefer the guilds of one location over another...

Like I said, lets go to the iron mountain, Curaw.

I don't think you can make plate armor using smithing, the highest on the list seems to be Coat of Plates. Making plate armor is ineffective anyway, most shops are too poor to pay the whole price. Gauntlets are far superior in this aspect, especially once you can start churning out reinforced or lordly ones at 2 iron a pop.

As promised, I embarked upon a voyage of discovery.  A voyage of iron!

We were closer to Dhirim, so that is where I headed to first.  The map told me nothing, but I've played enough of this mod to know roughly where it was located.  On the way, I found a band of looters, and thought to boost my fame a bit by defeating them.

But in Rigale, blindly chasing foes can lead to problems:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Since I was fighting on foot, the ambush was not a problem.  One looter sought to flee, but nobody leaves the party early!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Sadly, my aim is still poor, and he did indeed flee successfully.  But I hurt him, that is for sure!

Rigale lesson time: In Rigale, ammo depletes as you use it.  So for example, I started with 40 arrows.  I then shoot 10 in battle.  In my next battle, I will only have 30 arrows.  So, it's best not to waste ammo in Rigale.  Thankfully, it is possible to craft ammo, and craft it quite well.  A skilled woodcarver can make bodkin arrows with a +9 modifier!

Back to the task at hand.  I arrived at Dhirim, but they also were suffering from an epidemic.  So, I decided to help out, as I really wanted to see what they had.  After several days of warning people and burying the dead, the epidemic ceased, and I was finally able to see the inside of a town again.

Guilds at Dhirim:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

On the way, I got lost in the woods.  In Rigale, stay out of the woods!  When (not if) you get lost, you're greatly reduced in speed.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Finally, I arrived at Curaw.  In my game, Iron seems to be cheap in Curaw:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I also met my first companion!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Firentis wanted to ride with us as pentiance for killing his brother.  I guess working for the likes of me without fee would be enough of a burden to absolve most crimes.  I immediately told him to head out and tell the world that I should be their king.  The fool did so at once.  I love newbie companions!

Next update: Town comparisons and smithing options!
