Need help designing Super Fortress
« on: May 12, 2012, 05:01:58 pm »

Embarked on a a huge 60z level volcano and it has an interesting symmetrical layout to it.

As you can see it looks like several round semi circles sticking out.
Ignoring where the volcano is, you could imagine 8 semi circles, 2 on each side of the mountain.
My thought was to make them totally uniform, carve them away to indeed have 8 semi circles all the way around, layed in thick walls.

The trouble is picking a way to indeed make them "uniform"
I am not sure it is even possible to pic one semicircle design that would go around 8 times symmetrically.
Just looking for some help from the more mathematically and geometrically inclined out there.

DFHack has a function for marking circles for digging, either outlines or completely dug out.  You might be able to test with that.  You don't have to let anyone actually dig your designated circles if you don't like them.

I discovered this fantastic little gem the other day and it has helped me to drastically improve the aesthetics of my fortress design. I normally do a lot of planning on graph paper on my desk with the game open and pause in front of me, so I use that site to figure out exactly how to draw a circle of a specific radius, transcribe that pattern to the graph paper, then plan everything out from there. It's been a great help to me so far!

Bloody hell, that is freaking fantastic!
Now... Wish There was a way of importing the cross sections of my mountain into that program to have an idea of how to make the right walls.
Still good start.

Why, that's what the graph paper is for! :D Actually, I'm on my way to the store to pick up some more recently, I've really been on a roll recently. Sometimes I'll spend a few hours at my desk sketching out some amazing new fortress layout only to start up a new game and discover in 30 minutes that not only is it inefficient and time-consuming to build, but it's also ugly. Seriously, discovering they joys of circles really improved the longevity of this game for me.

I too spend more time planning and drawing than actually playing.
