I knew my fort was a poorly managed shit hole but at this point the game is just rubbing it in. What's her deal, anyway?

Oh, that makes sense. See all those people listed as friends? Yeah, they were part of the original attempt to stake out a claim at this site, some of them first wave immigrants, others second, maybe even third. I lost them all to a tantrum spiral after my dwarves tried to path over the water fall. I like to think they were all doing it as part of a dare, or maybe the fall bewitched them into jumping over the edge. Oh, her husband and older sister died too. I feel kind of sorry for her, every one of her friends and her spouse were attracted by stories of my fort and I sent them all to their deaths. I guess the only thing she was living for was a chance to see the fort that claimed the lives of pretty damn nearly everyone she loved, and maybe pay her respects. I shed a single, dwarfly tear. Internally, anyway.

Any immigrant with Dabbling skills is guaranteed to be a refugee from some past failed fortress mode game and they will retain any positive or negative thoughts and even their ON BREAK status. Fortresses that fail spectacularly and are abandoned can become a serious drag on future fortresses when their inhabitants arrive at your new forts as shellshocked wrecks a hairsbreadth from tantruming. That's why when you want to abandon a fort that is hitting a spiral, consider ensuring that there are no survivors . ;)

That's the funny part, I actually DID abandon the fort. I'm not even sure this dwarf was a previous citizen of my fort, but it sort of makes sense since all of her friends were.

Abandoning your fort doesn't kill all the dwarves there. You need to literally make sure every single dwarf dies and it crumbles to dust, otherwise all of the survivors will possibly become migrants, even the melancholy or babbling ones. I don't think Berserk dwarves migrate though.

Ah, that makes more sense. I seem to remember your fort's inhabitants spontaneously keeling over in 40d upon abandonment, but I might be misremembering that.

I don't think Berserk dwarves migrate though.
Good grief, I should hope not!

...But even if that is true, it would surely be possible for them to go berserk upon arrival, somewhat like Lokum here has gone melancholy.

Now I'm picturing an immigration wave of 20+ dwarves, all berserk. It would be like an angry mob, but with many times more infighting.

give all of the people rooms, or a massive shared room, over a pit of magma, and then... pull a lever. I wonder what would happen?

I wonder what would happen if you killed off everyone but a few babies and then abandoned before they died. Would you get baby migrants? It would be highly amusing if they crawled all the way from the old fort to the new without dying somehow. Due to the 1yr time gap would they arrive as children, I wonder? I'm tempted to do science on this.

If you succeeded in doing that, they would not arrive as children, even though they'd be a year old. They will however become children on new year's.

They probably got attacked by a goblin or a badger or something during worldgen or something. Mind you, children with Dabbling in various unarmed combat skills is entirely logical when you think back to your own childhood.

Also, mildly off-topic here, but Dorfimedes? Please find a different avatar, your current one creeps me right the fuck out.

It seems to garner a comment in nearly every thread I post. Besides, I've already adopted it! I'd get an unhappy thought! You can't make me! :P

In un-unrelated news, the migrant's baby died. Most of my fort is still located outside the fortress gate so I ordered everyone to evacuate to the inner burrow when three parties of goblin ambushers tailed the elven caravan there. Unfortunately, my four or so injured dwarves were abandoned in the hospital - also outside the gate - and a bloodbath ensued. I know goblins are supposed to be cold and unfeeling, but slaughtering a room of helpless cripples is a little low, even for them. Almost simultaneously, Lokum died of thirst just as she crossed the bridge since she had been refusing to eat or drink. The baby was found dehydrated about half a month afterwards.

I actually felt pretty sad about that, somehow. It seems that the game hasn't made me completely jaded yet, I was struck by how tragic it all was. So much senseless death.

It looks very much like the game is starting to make fortress self-destruct devices actually useful now! Well, in as much as a self-destruct is ever useful.

Imagine the danger if one of your migrants were a former soldier who immediately goes berserk...
