Author Topic: Things you've always wanted to do, but haven't. Be inspired, and help inspire.  (Read 10363 times)

In this thread:

1) We list things that we've always wanted to do, but for some reason, haven't. Optionally: list the excuses we give ourselves to justify why we haven't already done them.

2) Read what others list, and:

 a) Be inspired about what great ideas they are so we can do those things ourselves in our own lives.
 b) Provide helpful insights, how-to's or anecdotes that might help, or encourage those people to do the things they've always wanted to do.

I'll start:

I've always wanted to learn to Tango. I haven't...because I'm short, and when I've actually asked around looking for a dance partner the only girls who were interested were all taller than me.

Let them take the taller role? Or just roll with it. I don't actually know enough about tango to know why a woman partner being taller is a bad thing, heh.

I don't know what to say, because I was never interested in dancing to begin with. But yeah, don't let your height get to destroying what you always wanted to do, because you might eventually regret it.

Sorry for giving such a generic and useless advice.

I haven't gotten around to making music these days. It's either I say to myself that I absolutely have no inspiration to make music that doesn't sound mechanical, "I have no time for this s**t!", or that I don't know what this knob does and such.

I know I shouldn't procrastinate, but yeah, it's hard not to procrastinate.

I have yet to do my walking-pilgrimage to Mongolia.

From Europe.

Considering it's Mongolia, wouldn't it be more appropriate on horseback?

What medium are you using to make music? Do you play an instrument, or are you using a music synthesizer like Garage Band?

If you're playing something like guitar or piano, I've found it's helpful to tinker around playing random chords and notes for a while, seeing what sounds good but hasn't been overdone. The great thing about music is that even if something has been done a lot, just playing it in a different way makes it sound new again. If you're using a program like Garage Band, you can do pretty much the same thing with the keyboard piano thingy.

Basically, just spend time playing random stuff! You'll find some sound you like after a while and you'll be able to take it from there, adding twists to it and making it unique. It takes a bit of a time investment, but it's worth it once you get something going.

I still haven't sat down to do any real programming. My excuse was that I wanted to be well read on it before I started doing stuff. And I'm not pretty well read on it. Then I got a full-time job working with C++ programmers. When you only have about ~20 hours during the work week to yourself, it makes it hard to invest in programming that you aren't confident about.

There's a church around here with a really slanted and curved roof. I want to go skiing off it, but 1. I don't know how to ski, 2. it never snows around here, and 3. how am I going to get up to the top without falling off?

Man, me too. I don't even have any programs or anything to make music with, but I want to, but I'm poor.

The Gun Store, Las Vegas. They have a private range with a variety of automatic weapon rentals. Most packages are about $150.

I want to kick my adventures up a notch or two. Embarking on ones that last weeks or months, and span across hundreds of miles. The problem is that such adventures are a bitch to prepare for.

Also, I deeply long to hear the beautiful sound of that first strike to a human head with a lead pipe or other blunt and reasonably heavy object. That sensation in your hands, that look of disbelief on their face just a moment before contact...The problem is, it's usually not taken very well by the person on the receiving end.

So... You want to bang someone over the head with a lead pipe.

...

I can relate. :P

Also, i kind of want to get started making chiptunes (with that snazzy FamiTracker program), but whenever i try i either grind to an immediate halt or get all "dear god this sounds like a goat being violated" and then abandon ship. Likely because i don't feel like spending another 3 years getting somewhat decent at another craft. The problem in this? I often have a really rad chiptune running in my minds ear, but i can't bring it to life. :c (and also because it'd go really well with the pixelling)

Visceral dreams help with that, if you can conjure them up. I didn't plan mine but it was the most violent I've been towards another person. Better a dream than doing it for real I assure you.

So... Lucid dreaming to crack some skulls?
