From what I understand we've still got well over a billion years before the calendar runs out of numerals. But even then all that would happen is we just wouldn't know what to call the next numeral.

I find it funny that they made a calendar capable of counting over a billion years into the future. They certainly seemed to expect their civilization to last a long time.

Still, 3000 years is a decent run for an ancient civilization, most struggled to last more than two.

If memory serves it was actually part of their religion that the world would be renewed every so many thousands of years remaking everything, and had already happened multiple times.

I suppose its interesting, but it isn't really indicative of how long they expected their civilization to last, similarly the modern calendar can go for a googleplex more years (and thats not even bothering with stuff like ten googleplex) till we run out of things to call the years, and I don't think that anyone expects modern civilization to outlast the heat-death of trillions of universes set end on end.

Except for Twinkies and SPAM, which probably will be around at the heat-death of the universe.

So you're saying in a few trillion years, mankind will not only have made some things truly impervious to the passage of time, but they will be Twinkies and Spam?

What a legacy to leave.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
