I have a large fort and wish to place families together in housing. This is especially true with children, but you can't easily tell who their parents are. When you've got over 140 dwarves running around, it's a pain to go into the v -> z->r menu each time and remember all of those details or write them down.

Can Dwarf Therapist or something do this?

I just use nick-name labels to record the families everyone's in. Not much help if you haven't been doing this from the start though...

From the "u" list it is only v->r, and if you start nick-naming them from the first child in the "u" list (v->y->n) you can traverse their entire family trees using "r", with v->y->n, type, return, esc, esc, choose next relative.  It gets easier as you go along because the younger children will already be nick-named.

Thank you guys. Dear God, that sounds difficult though. Honestly sounds like something for the suggestion thread: some way to easily tell who is related to who.

You may discover extended families where the relationships are only visible from one side.  In other words, the program itself does not have complete information.  Earlier generations don't always contain information about later ones, if they are not directly parent and child.  It's a lot of fun if you get migrants from several waves who are related.  At least, I think it is fun.   ;D

I seem to recall that there was some discussion of adding the ability to view family trees in Legends Viewer, but it hasn't been implemented yet.

Any of my efforts of keeping track of the family lines usually becomes useless after I hit about 60 guys. Also the huge migration waves doesn't help, I always save an quit for a while before I gather the mental strength to assign jobs to 21 generally useless dorfs. By then I have no desire to map their family lines unless they do something spectacular.

Lately, I've been wrestling with this same issue... It would help to not pick Urist McPopular, Everybody's Uncle And Granddad, for the military. Especially not the "Dog" or "Easy" companies, where casualities are more or less a given in any engagement against any foes more formidable than plump helmet men.  :-\

It would also be great to be able to cull the military recruitment list to include able-bodied dorfs only, so poor Urist McHandsfree doesn't get drafted into an axdwarf squad. (Sure, you get the pertinent info from the z-health screen, but then you have to remember which Urist was the one in your militia and which had impaired grasp or a broken spine... Not what you would call "convenient".)

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

Yeah, make sure it's the Marksdwarf squad. My Militia commander (started as a lowly recruit) is a legendary marksdwarf, with about 15 kills and one arm :D
