Try to look around.

If we really are in the darkness, then we need to turn on the lights. Im fairly certain a repair bot would have some.

Run Heuristical scan for possibilities.

You dislike the darkness. You attempt to look around.

You detect movement in response to your attempt, but the sensation is strange. It feels jerky... mechanical and unfamiliar.

You attempt to create light. You do get a response, though not one you expected.

A box of light appears before you, and words scroll across it. The light does not seem to illuminate anything else around you.

Code: [Select]
-Repair Unit 024 Damage Control Interface-

Fault: Carbon Dioxide Ratio Mismatch

Enter command:

>_

Well, you're a heuristic repair unit right? May as well get Heuristic on this.

Code: [Select]
> Run heuristics scan for possible cause.
Your mind darkens and fades suddenly. You feel an enormous burden, as though a great weight were squashing you flat. Something is tapping your mind's resources and running through hundreds of thousands of possibilities.

You fade and fade, the weight pressing you into nothing until you lose consciousness.

Code: [Select]
Heuristics scan complete.

Fault is impossible.

You regain consciousness and see the words on the box of light.

Well that's not helpful... it's right though, this is entirely impossible. You realize that you know something... the atmospheric systems are fault tolerant to 93% physical destruction and have three separate backup systems. Furthermore they would regenerate any damage on their own before the atmospheric ratio changed even 0.0001%. To have a deviation of a whole 0.01% is entirely impossible in every way.

A cold mechanical voice spears through your thoughts. Investigate the fault. Find the error. Correct. Correct.

Damn you cerapa.
If you look closely I actually used your suggestion.

"001101010"

I placed a binary 2 to the end of the group, which caused an input error. 9 bits instead of 8.

Obey the mechanical voice.
Find the fucking error, search for things, that should be not here.

Code: [Select]
> Initiate system scan for anomalies.
You fade again as your mind is bent to the task. You can still 'see' the bright box of light but it's as if it is at the end of a long dark tunnel. Something is pounding... a regular, rhythmic vibration is causing your vision to quake and your mind to shudder.

Suddenly the pressure fades.

Code: [Select]
Anomaly detected.

Atmospheric system software contains size mismatch of 6% above operating normal.

Fault detected.

Recommended fix action: restore software from backup.

Fault correction will disengage Heuristic Repair Unit 024.

Proceed? Y/N

>_

As your vision begins to focus again, you read the words.

If you fix the fault, you will return to sleep.

If you do not, you could stay awa- Investigate the fault. Correct. Correct all errors.

The mechanical voice cuts through your thoughts. Your waking mind shatters in a cacophony of wails as images and memories flood past. You see things...

A boy on a bicycle, smiling and waving.

A woman weeping as she speaks into a phone.

A baseball game, where you share a hotdog with your son.

Something takes hold of your mind. Inhuman fingers sift your thoughts and reorder them.

You are Heuristic Repair Unit 024. You must repair the fault.

Compliance is compulsory.

You feel something warm and liquid rolling across your cheek. You taste copper. You do not know what this means.

...

You wonder why the software for the atmospherics system is larger than normal.

Oh god, what.
Investigate yourself. Try to find some kind of mirror.

You attempt to investigate yourself.

You start with the earlier attempt at looking around. Again you detect some kind of mechanical, jerking movement in response to this but you see nothing different.

You seem to be a conscious being in a dark space with a very bright box of light in front of you. You understand what 'light' is: a specific band of electromagnetic frequencies. You concur from this that you have at least one sensor which can perceive light, but you can't quite remember. In fact your memories have faded, and you can feel the cold grip of something in your mind keeping you focused.

You remember earlier that you heard something... that means you also have auditory sensors. You heard... what was it?

A gurgling sound. Yes...

Like liquid through tubes. Something went through a tube, some kind of liquid, and then your mind cleared and focused. The tube must be attached to you somehow, and the liquid altered your mind's consciousness. Before the gurgle, you were fuzzy and everything was difficult. Even thinking was difficult.

But before the liquid you had names for things which you do not now.

You're not sure what you are.

What is a mirror? Why did you think of a mirror?

Mirror...

A surface polished to reflect visible light.

At this thought, the box of light changes into a mirrored finish.

You see two bloodshot eyes staring back at you from the mirror. They frighten you.

You scream.

Code: [Select]
Registering fault with heuristic Repair Unit 024: Cerebral hemorrhage

You awaken.

You are in darkness.

Your mind is fuzzy... incomplete.

You have an objective... a cold mechanical voice from your subconscious is telling you that you must investigate the fault.
