Or kill your dog. Large daggers are insanely overpowered. A lucky strike from a kobold's large dagger can kill almost anything.
A-yep. Like a dwarven child for example.
Cleft his head clean off.
‼Fun‼ ensued.

What in dear Armok's name is that breed?
I'd venture to guess either Irish Wolfhound or Scottish Deerhound. Probably the former, considering the size and bulk; the Scots are somewhat smaller and slimmer.
Yeah, those guys are pretty big. As in "almost able to look you in the eyes from the same level" big. I've also seen one bite a log the thickness of my arm in twain without too much effort.

So, extrapolating from there, yeah, the war dogs are kind of under-powered. I guess they're based on something like a Doberman or a German Shepherd.

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

It's an Irish wolfhound, which, as its name implies was used for hunting wolves.

I'm thinking that I need to figure out how to mod in some leather armor for my dogs. Or give them steel dentures.

I believe masterwork has armoered horses and mastiffs. Could look at those raws.

Dire dog

with dogs it's a numbers game. 1 dog might be easily killed, but by the time serious trouble arrives, you probably have 20, if not 50. I switched to jaguars in my current fort though, and only untill I can get something better. Currently breeding rhinos, but that is being held back due to slow maturing rate

Goblin appraoches child in hiding, rounds a corner and bumbs into a rhino's ass. It turns it's head, a look of seething cartoony rage upon it's face.

It was only when they heard a shrill cry and several loud thumps and squishy sounds of tearing meat did the dwarves know that poor sod was even there.

That is kind of what happened. Basically the rhino gored one to death before I even had actually spotted the thief. Only the spreading red stains showed me the spot where the fight was, finally. (first horn break leg, horn breaks arm, stomp breaks other arm, horn tears a lung, kick to the head = dead)

I had a giant war jaguar liberate a goblin snatcher's head from his shoulders before. And several unlucky kobolds' limbs from thier owners.

My last fort's main defense was a pair of Giant Dingos, nicknamed Zuul and Vinze Clortho, who made mince of every invader. Occasionally it would appear they would toss the goblins and 'bolds back and forth across the hall to each other like screaming chewtoys. The ones that bolted past them to make it further in?

Well.

They never see the clear glass sawblades.

I imagine one unlucky goblin surviving, reporting to his demon master that he made it pasty a pair of "GODSDAMNED MONSTERS" and reported "THE AIR FUCKING ATTACKED US!!"

Morale drops as the goblins fear the dwarves can control wind to cut things now.
