Wells unusable
« on: May 09, 2012, 10:39:59 pm »

When ever I build a new well my dwarfs use it a couple of times and then leave stagnant water in the bucket and will not use it anymore. I unbuild the well and use a fresh buck but the same thing happens again. Is there a work around for this?

Build an atom smasher on the access tile. If you see a dwarf try washing himself in it, punish him. Sure it's a horrible idea but comes in handy if it's a syndrome he's washing off so you can destroy it. Or because you think he's an ass, either works =P

That should be a new type of project, making a rug design in dwarf fortress (With accurate coloring)

^ This.  Check the water reservoir below your well.

Yet dwarves should use this stagnant water just fine. I have several wells, and my dwarves actually prefer the outside, distant, poorly built, stagnant water well to inside, close (near meeting area), full-steel, clean water well. They use it for both washing themselves with soap and for filling buckets they give my soldiers and other thirsty dwarves.

In a functional fortress with booze stockpiles, dwarves will only rarely use a well. They will use it to clean wounded and bring water to thirsty dwarves who can not get to a liquid (stationed soldiers, injured dwarves.) If you have no thirsty, immobile dwarves and no wounded in need of cleaning, they will only use the well for cleaning themselves and the fort. Perhaps if you simply waited longer, you would see your dwarves using the well again. Stagnant water is not an issue. It is perfectly usable for any purpose water is used for. It just gives a bad thought and a higher chance of infection if not using soap.
