Spoiler: Character Sheet (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: School Sheet (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Family Sheet (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: New Clan (click to show/hide)

Please point out any errors, also I'm 90% sure Akahoshi actually means 'red star' but if you are an expert in the language and it's wrong then please point it out too. Minamoto means 'Warrior' 'source' and I believe Genki means 'Energetic,' so the game reference actually has a meaning. Also half the names that aren't 'Ted' or whatever probably aren't even used in Japan. I'll fix it if it's really important.

OOC:
Doomblade- EDIT: Actually, I need to talk to you first. Expect a PM.
Lillipad & Digital Hellhound: I've sent you your sheets. You can start anywhere, doing anything in Sumeru. If you're having trouble coming up with a thing, let myself or File know. We can, like, just throw you in somewhere, media in res, or something.

Ninokora Shizume
The barman greedily eyes the bag of coins in your hand. "That'll be three bu," he replies, grin still plastered across his ugly face.

Hori stood at the gates. He never felt comfortable in cities, but Sumeru was small enough that he felt relatively at ease. He could smell food in the distance, and felt the small peck of hunger wash over him. A smirk crossed his face, a big hunt in a small city.
-He follows that scent-

Metasune stood up from the hard wooden bench seat on the train as it ground to a halt. Stretching his back, he collected his small bag of luggage and his walking stick and made his way off the train, walking over to the official in charge of the freight. Looking up, the official greeted him. "Yes, Metasune, is it? Your shipment has been unloaded to the cargo warehouse on the west side of the village. Feel free to collect it at any time." "Thank you sir," Metasune replied, slipping him a bu as he walked  to the nearest inn, the Sun Blossom to look for a room. He had to meet with Kagari, the village leader tomorrow to discuss the deal.

Enter the Sun Blossom inn and inquire about buying a room.

Just for entertainment purposes, let me pull out my Japanese-English dictionary and see what the names we're choosing mean.

Hori

This one is simple. Either "moat" or "dig." It also has the advantage of actually being a name, but it's typically a family name rather than a first name.

Morikano Hayato

This one's also fairly easy. Hayato is a real place. Using a place name as a family name is fairly common. Implication is simply that you're a member of or a descendant of the family that founded the city.

As for Morikano...could be interpreted a few ways, with "forest power" and "harvested forest" being likely candidates.

Shizume Ninokara

Best guess for Shizume is "quiet eyes." Though I wonder if you really intended shizuNE, which is a fictional name used by various female characters in anime, and is probably a derivative of the same root meaning quiet/calm/serene/etc.

Ninokara is a bit troublesome, but "the husk/shell of two" isn't unreasonable

Metasan Ketusune (His real name)

Metasan? "San" is an honorific. It's basically like "Mr." And "Meta" is the Japanese loanword for the unit of measurement: "meter." So your name is "Mr. Meter." :) Which makes one wonder what we call you when we're being polite. Shall we call you Metasan san? Or is your real name simply Meta, but you're a condescending bastard and you refer to yourself with an honorific? Which would be like someone introducing themselves to you by saying, "Hi. My name's Mr. Meter. You can call me Mr. Meter. Don't forget the Mr."

Ketusune is problematic because there is no "tu" character in japanese. Closest approximations would be Ketsusune or Ketsune, both of which are also problematic. First interpretation of "Ketsune" I see is "Ass, huh?" As in, vulgar ass. Not donkeys. If we stretch the grammar a bit we might be able to interpret as the impolite command for of "pinch hair" but I'm a bit rusty on the exact meanings of using unconjugated verb roots in japanese. On the other hand, Ketsusune rather than Ketsune...best I get there is "Ass shin." I'm not exactly sure what an ass shin is.

However...just a guess, it's possible this wasn't a word you made up, but rather, you heard somewhere, in which case you probably intended kitsune, which means fox.

But, given the choice of including the honorific as part of your name and specifying that it's the "real" name..."Mr. Meter Ass, isn't it?" might be reasonable.

Considering I just thought of those names randomly, I'm suprised I got so close to actual words... Ah well, I went ahead and fixed the family name. It fits, considering what they do...

Wacky stuff, LB. Hail was just talking about some of that in the IRC we're in for The Hub when you posted that!

Also, more LB related shenanigans:
There is now an Empress of Nihon. Quite a long time ago, The Ryoshun unified the few remaining disparate clans, and their Daimyo was subsequently recognized by the Empress/Emperor as Shogun. Flash forward to the present day minus thirty-five years, and simmering tensions between clans, among other things, has caused a civil war to erupt.
This should not in any way alter anything that's going on with any current characters. Honest. It just means the Ryoshun have been "the Shogunate" for much, much longer than has already been implied. And also there's an imperial family.

On the IC side of things...

Hori
You follow your nose, as it's never really led you astray before. Not before long, you've found yourself wandering into the market at the center of the village. Several people are hawking their wares here, and near one side of the market is a ramshackle, if cozy, inn and tea room called The Sun Blossom. Also, interestingly, is that a large, if oddly quiet, crowd has gathered near one of the side streets. You can't see what they're looking at, though.

Metasune
You tip the man 1 bu for the information, leaving you with 8 koku and 4 bu worth of coinage, before heading to one of Sumeru's two inns. Entering the Tea Room shortly before a rather nondescript warrior, you make your way to the room in the back to speak with the innkeeper. Right now he's busy speaking with a Ronin. You catch a bit of the conversation as you enter.
Seems the fellow is asking the Ronin for 3 bu for a room. (49692=18) That's a rip-off, if you ever heard one.

In a flash Shizume had his blade at the man's neck as he spoke, "I'm not an idiot you can con out of their money, it is scum like you that give the most honest people bad names. Now I suggest you rethink your price before I free you of your hand, and your money to give to the poor." His eyes flared slightly as he laid eyes on the man before him, he despised people who used their ownership of something to control the ways of people who may know no better.

@LordBucket: Hayato is actually his first name - I vaguely remembered that family names come first in Japan, and I thought I saw someone called that way in the OP(s). If Behind the Name is to be believed, it basically means 'falcon-person'. I picked it mostly out of random.

Morikano I just came up by mashing two surnames from there together. I'm glad it came to mean something understandable. Forest Powerrrr! We're secret hippies!

@thatkid/GMs: +1 Agility as a mechanical bonus seems a bit odd for my family. I sort-of expected something mental instead. Also, you might want to update the Ryoshun-section with the new fluff.

---

The earth rumbled softly against Hayato's palm as he watched the steam-gushing, barrel-like train rush past, wheels turning faster than the eye could follow on the tracks. Flocks of birds and small animals escaped from its wrath, scattering and hurrying past him like he wasn't even there. He was reminded of an earthquake from his youth, one that had split open the earth and caused the river to flood.

Sumeru stood below to the northeast, where the tracks bent and where the train was now slowing to a halt. He patted Katsu's neck, trying to calm the old horse down. His daishơ and naginata felt heavy on his back, as did the travelling bag slung over his shoulder. Of course, Samurai did not complain or ease up - that was for the lower classes.

'Come now,' he muttered to the horse, 'we have work to do.'

He had been told the Shogun himself had given his orders, though why his lord bothered himself with the training of petty peasant militias in the wilderness, he did not know. Hayato guided them down the broken slope, moving carefully as not to injure either of them. He wasn't a master rider, but it had been part of his studies. He'd heard of men and women who could scale practically sheer cliffsides and leap vast gaps due to their skill on horseback.

He could still smell the train's smoke hanging heavily on the air at the bottom, pervading every inch of the once-wooded path. Grimacing to himself, Hayato led Katsu along the tracks, seeing the first roofs of Sumeru up ahead. A group of peasants was approaching from that direction, clothed in barely better than rags. He noted the reverence in their gaze with pleasure.

'Peasants!' he demanded of the group, 'Who rules this town? The... village elder? Mayor? Lord?'

Hayato approaches Sumeru, asking for the ruler/important people of the town

A crowd. A crowd! Hori hadn't seen a crowd in some time. He was interested in what could gather so many people.
-He goes to see what they crowd around-

Hori

This one is simple. Either "moat" or "dig." It also has the advantage of actually being a name, but it's typically a family name rather than a first name.

I just grabbed a few random names off a feudal clan list on Wikipedia that seemed interesting. Hori was the only one that seemed sustainable without both names.

Metasan had started to look around the room when he heard the commotion by the bar. Turning to look, he saw the Ronin holding his sword at the innkeeper's neck. He walked up to the confrontation.

Minamoto means 'Warrior' as far as I know and

Both my dictionary and babelfish translate it as "source." Just a guess, you probably mean Miyamoto, as in Miyamoto Musashi, who is basically the most famous japanese swordsman of all time. However the etymology of Miyamoto appears to be "one who lives at a shrine."

Senshi might be more what you're looking for.

Quote
I believe Genki means 'Energetic,'

The word has additional connotations, but yes. If you wanted to ask someone if they're feeling well, if they're in good spirits, etc. you would ask if they're genki. And if they're a manic young girl who acts like they're sniffing sugar mixed with speed, you might call them a Genki Girl

Energetic is a perfectly valid translation.
