Thanks for pointing out that mistake with Akahoshi.
Minamato still works since it would translate into energetic source, right? Although that sounds a little weird.

Not sure if typo. Previously you said Minamoto, now you're saying Minamato.

minamoto = origin/source
mina mato ~= "everyone that is the butt of a joke"

EDIT: After some searching, apparently mina instead of minna to refer to human beings is still correct. So the implication that you're speaking of objects rather than people shouldn't be an issue. Though I don't think you'll want to use minamato either way.

Genki Minamoto  = energetic source

Minamoto Genki = ...hmm. Would have to think about that. Japanese word order is kind of funny sometimes. With no particle, I think this comes out to roughly "energy that is the type: source."

Also note that Minamoto is a historically significant name.

Incidentally, when will we be starting? Whenever I sit down to write a custom clan/family history I keep getting distracted researching the legal mechanics of the Meiji era Imperial household.

I'm pretty sure we just start whenever and faff about Startersville until we find something else to do.

Yep. Right now we're busy threatening cheating innkeepers with death. Don't worry, I might join in too.

Given the character creation process, two GMs, and the formal explanation of how combat rolls will be handled in the OP, I assumed this would be a bit more than just open roleplay.

I assume so too, but I guess we just haven't gotten there yet. After all, I haven't started spying yet, the militia hasn't started training yet, etc.

The OP says that Sumeru is a crossroad. So we probably have a few streamlined options for whenever the plot finally strikes.

Yep that was a typo.
I chose Minamoto because it was significant actually. I was also under the impression that in Japan the last names were given first for an introduction? If that's wrong then Akoshi Ted probably looks weird to everyone in the world.

Yes, but I've lost track of who in this thread is and isn't using that convention.

Shouldn't be an issue. Full names aren't really expected to make out sentences, whether in english or japanese. If somebody introduced themselves as "Bob Archer" you probably wouldn't stop to think it odd that the word order is not correct to refer to the haircut that a person with a bow might use. An "archer bob" haircut.

I'd like to join this, as I have a character mostly figured out, but I'm not sure what to do about names. I need a family name, a personal name, and a name for the family that runs the school of etiquette he studied at (he's going to be a fat courtier, to contrast all these lean ronin, bushi, and ninja. And being chubby nicely fits his backstory).

I have a courtier submitted, pending some revisions.

I can come up with some japaneses names for you if you give me some input to work with.

Well, I don't know about the personal name, but for the family name I suppose it should be something fierce, because this is a family that traditionally only produces warriors, and my character only became a courtier because he proved to be so unsuited to fighting that he would disgrace the family name if he became a samurai.

The family name for the etiquette school should be something like flattery, I suppose. Or maybe some sort of flower, that would probably be more subtle.

EDIT: Actually, I had a thought. What is your character's school like? Because maybe we could be from the same school and be either friends or rivals. Or frenemies!

Or maybe some sort of flower, that would probably be more subtle.

Oseji: flattery
Gyougi: manners
Reikōkō: etiquette highschool
Hana: flower
Ikebana: the art of flower arranging
Seikou: exquisite

Yaseta: skinny
I appreciate the irony, though I think this might be a bit unlikely.

Quote
Kenage: manly/heroic
This bit of irony, on the other hand, is both appropriate and delicious, so I will take it.

Quote
Moretsu: fierce storm
I quite like this one, both the meaning and the sound, especially combined with my given name. Moretsu Kenage.

Quote
Ikebana: the art of flower arranging
Ikebana School of Etiquette. I like the sound of that. Although if you noticed the edit to my previous post, if it turns out our schools are similar enough, I'd prefer to join yours, if you don't mind, since I think it could add a nice dynamic to our characters' relationship starting off, and to eliminate redundancy.
