Magma Forges - Liability on Fortress Defence?
« on: May 09, 2012, 02:42:33 pm »

So, the clown car managed to get inside my fortress somehow.. and honestly, I'm quite baffeled.

I didn't have time to check where they came, but my guess is on the magma forge as they can swim through magma correct? Did I miss something or can the circus actually come though the magma forges?

That's your breach.

Damm these things! How can I prevent this from happening again?

Make channel, pump magma to that channel, obsidianize, except for one tile (must be more than 1/7 to prevent evaporation), put magma forge on that tile. Repeat when necessary.

Problem solved.

yes.  If they can get to the magma sea they can get into your forges if they were directly above the magma sea.  Its fairly simple to construct magma forges where this is impossible, by forcing magma upward through a grate from below via a pump, or otherwise getting magma into a pipe and blocking the other end.  There's dozens of different ways i think.

When you build a magma-powered building, place one of the dark Xs over the opening in the floor.  That should seal it.

I've basically breached a volcano from the side by channeling an underground tunnel, the best bet would probably be to use water to form an obsidian wall at the start of the tunnel correct?

i have heard tell of flying creatures such as demons being able to travel diagonally upward.  Has anyone ever observed this?

from the side view, a flying creature could travel from 2 to 1, despite the floor formed by the bottom wall forming a seal with the wall on the upper level.

I have had magma crabs spit diagonally upward through such a place.  In 40d, I believe that archers could shoot through those places, also.

Edit:  I have never had forgotten beasts come up though magma-powered buildings when they were built as I described, but if the diagonal access is a concern, then just build a wall alongside the building to seal the diagonal.  I think it is probably a good idea anyway, because of the magma crabs.

I have a bridge in the tunnel leading to my magma reservoir, along with a steel floodgate.

Should I see something nasty coming that way I can just close the bridge, wait for it to come near and then smash them with the bridge.

But to be protected from flying clowns traveling through your magma pools, its best to just floor them over or pour water over them to seal them with obsidian.

You could also place undermagma cage traps and such made out of magma-safe materials.
Just remember to have a separate magma pump to drain the area to collect the captured prey.

Can they building destroy the workshop from below? I think they can.

I've always done the obsidian plug to fully isolate the smelters from the rest of the line. It's easy enough to channel out again if you need to extend your system.

current common knowledge is that NOTHING can be destroyed from below. A simple locked floor hatch in the only upwards staircase access will stop the clowns

Again, on the assumption that such diagonal movement is possible, a wall wouldn't help since the center tile of the magma-building is pathable, and you can't build a wall there.

Well, again, I've never had a forgotten beast break through my magma-powered buildings, and I have had them come through an open hole in the floor of the forge room so they are capable of swimming in magma.

Perhaps someone who had actually tried it with clowns will eventually reply.
