*What Grinds Your Gears?
« on: May 06, 2012, 09:02:10 pm »

DF is a pretty awesome game, but like all games, it has it's share of flaws. Whether it be a bug or otherwise, there are things that just make us want to punch a hole in the computer monitor. So, I ask, my fellow community, "What grinds your gears?".

*The title is a reference to an American television series. If you can tell me what it is, you'll get a cookie. :)

Live long if you can, and prosper by any means necessary.  Any means, Urist.  So pull that lever, or by Armok, I'll lock you outside come next siege.
He who plays with dwarves must take care that he does not become a dwarf.  And when you stare into DwarfFort, Dwarffort stares back into you.

No cursor memory in lists.

Every time I have to leave a list, every time I have selected one thing in a list, and have to search through the list again...

And oh boy, if you get dropped out of a caravan trading screen before completing it?  Oh, that annoys.  It takes half an hour finding things to trade for in the giant lists of crap those caravans bring some times.

Personally, I like [DF] because after climbing the damned learning cliff, I'm too elitist to consider not liking it.

*hands you a cookie*

Here's mine-

-Dwarves take too long to bring items to depot.
-Berserk dwarves destroy my buildings (after I've spent HOURS waiting for said buildings to be constructed).
-Teh Elvz (Need I explain?)
-Goblins ambushing my trade caravan (usually when I need it the most!!!).

And to a lesser extent-

-I don't know... Perhaps the lack of a "pollution system" in a game involving heavy industry?

Babies. My dwarves have so many babies. 400 babies!

@DwarfMeister: How much pollution do you expect from medieval era type/scale industry? O.o

Sorting, sorting, more sorting.  And filtering too.

Instead, the trade/military/burrow/stock/etc. screens are nightmarish from lack of sorting/filtering.

Urgh. The only things that get my goat are the current bugs...

1. Stagnant Water: IT'S FLOWING NOW, STOP CALLING IT STAGNANT!

2. Cleaning: Why won't anyone clean up the filth everywhere?!

3. Military Equipment: This melee dwarf clearly does not have a weapon on him, yet it's checked off on the (e)quip screen?...

Yeah, that's all that comes to mind.

It's a feature that Toady didn't tell anybody about. You see, the dwarves have special eyesight that allows them to see the trace amounts of radiation around them. It's very beneficial for them because they live in underground caverns where little to no light exists. The settled dust helps them keep track of where they put things. If they cleaned, they would lose track of all their stuff!!! It's also why they hate living on the surface.

That's why DF needs a schooling system. Those kids need structure!!!
